Topic: Caffe Rosto; anyone else? (4 msgs / 110 lines)
1) From: Ken Schillinger
All of this talk about fluid bed roasters inspires the following.
Most of my roasting is done with a Behmor, with which I am very happy and =
wouldn't think about trading away. I find that I still like to use (play =
with) the Caffé Rosto on occasion as that is more by feel than formula. D=
oes =
anyone on the list still use theirs?
Ken.
Liking his coffee pure and black.

The only "made for roasting coffee" device that I own is a CR. I have a =
couple of modded airpoppers but the CR sees the most use. The silicone =
gasket on the lid is starting to lose its elasticity, not sure how I'll =
replace it but I'll come up with a kludge when the time arrives...

Yeah. Nothing but
I have 2 that are 4-5 years old. The thermostat fuse has been replaced =
with a short wire for a long time, I split the fans off the heaters last =
summer and now run the heat off a variac, can't say it makes me a better =
roaster, but I can stretch out the roast a bit--what used to finish in10 =
minutes and often have divots can now go to 20 or longer (if I want to) =
and only have divots when I get sloppy. (ok that's still pretty often) =
Have installed TCs in the bottoms of the bowls on both, usually these =
days I just watch time and Temp and go by the bean appearance and the =
smell but sometimes I'll keep track of T/t.
Usually roast 144 gm batch--turns into 120 when done, split that into 2 =
pots.
I have had upgrade fever a time or 2 but the one I really want would be =
like the one Les has--just haven't pulled that trigger yet.

I've been using the CR for years, modded with a PID controller and variac
and my own custom program (the modding was done with Mike Dhabolt's (sp?)
guidance.
It still works great, except for the chaff buildup at times. Anyone figure
out a good way to deal with this?
BTW, I'm always on the lookout to buy spare parts if anyone has some...
