Topic: List replies (same day?) (56 msgs / 1055 lines)

If newer members are automatically set to moderated status, then a list administrator still needs to release their posts. I thought that was what was happening to my posts, but then Tom mentioned that sending from a different address then was used to subscribe caused messages to go to moderation. I use Earthlink DSL, which is really Qwest DSL resold by Earthlink, so my outgoing email server identifies as Qwest instead of Earthlink even though my "From" says Earthlink. This message is being sent from Earthlink Web Mail (which I don't normally use) so it should be sent from an Earthlink server... so we'll see if it goes to moderation or not.

Im curious how some manage to reply to an initial question the same day the
list comes out, ie how do they see the question before the 'bulk' list is
e-mailed?
cheers and thanks

I think it has to do with the list being moderated. I think every post is
read by someone at SM to make sure they're ok... which is why on monday
morning around 930 pacific a bunch of posts wind up on the list... someone
read them and sent them through. a bunch showed up friday the 2nd, even
though Sweet Marias was closed, so i suspect someone looked at them. looks
like a bunch came through this afternoon, too. i think the posts of all new
members is moderated, which is why it sometimes takes a while for them to
come through.
but that's all supposition... but that seems to be what's going on, as best
as i can tell...?

Perhaps you're subscribed to the digest format. If you subscribe to
individual emails, you'll see them as they show up on the list.
With that said, though, there seems to be a significant lag on some posts.
For example, Outlook Express shows your email was sent on 2 Jan 09 at 10:10
am, but I show a received time stamp of 4 Jan 09 at 10:10 am. I suppose
this could be a lag in some server somewhere, but it does seem to be
associated with specific addresses. Oftentimes the slow-to-show emails come
through with identical received stamps despite scattered sent stamps. Some
months ago, Tom put the entire list on moderation to settle things down a
bit. It could be, and this is just a guess, that some addresses are still
on moderation either from past actions or because they're new to the list.
Again, just guesswork on my part.
Bob

+1 on it likely being a digest mode setting.
BTW, to change your subscription from digest mode to individual post
mode, log into the mailing list site (link at bottom of each post) and
turn Digest Mode off.

I've had this problem for some time and a while back spent a lot of time trying to get it sorted out. The fundamental problem seems to be the host for this mailing list since their mail servers are unconventional in the way they work. This causes your ISP problems if they're trying to filter for spam based on the host since it varies from message to message. Therefore, their "white list" and "black list" filters have a hard time being complete since it changes all the time. Eventually, my ISP worked with the host and managed to get their white list more complete, but it's still not perfect.
There are basically two solutions: contact your ISP and see if they'll work with you to get it fixed or use a gmail account since its filters seem to be more forgiving.
Good luck! BTW, no telling how soon this message will make its way...

I use gmail for this list, and find that occasionally I need to check the

I keep getting kicked off the list for excessive mail bounces. Anyone else
experiencing this? I am using Charter.net for mail. I notice that
sometimes, I get answers to questions I have never seen and have even missed
some of my own posts, so I know that all are not getting through. I have
all filtering at the ISP turned off except I recently added this list serve
to my allow list. It does not seem to help. I am thinking of setting up a
third party email at Yahoo or G-mail for mailing lists. How are those
working for those that have set them up? Any ideas?

I set up a gmai account just for this list and it works great. I have had
to fish an occasional email out of the Spam folder. You can set up your
email client to also download emails from your gmail account if you want,
but I like how it sorts all the emails into threads.

I have Gmail and Yahoo accounts. Gmail works best for me, but YMMV. The
spam filters on both work pretty well, but Gmail filtering works best for
me. Yes, a homeroast message makes it to the spam filter now and then.
However, almost no spam makes it into my in basket. Gmail is easy to set up
and use.

There are obviously a lot of service providers, and the quality varies widely. I get the fewest spam messages and the
most consistent service using my .mac address and my .gmail address.
I recently read a report (I think at CIO.com) that Hotmail has some of the best spam filtering and good service also.

Mike,
If you are getting kicked due to bounces, that means that your mail
server is rejecting mails that the list server is sending out, or
otherwise responding with errors. If it was silently filtering them,
the list server wouldn't care.

I am unable to devise an address to put in my ISP's spam filter, to allow
messages from this group to make it through. It seems as though the only way
is to add each and every list members email address to the "allowed list".
On all other groups I am on, I can just add one address such as-
xyz . no luck with this group, so I only see a small sampling
of the messages.
If anyone has ideas I'd be happy to hear them (if they make it through the

I believe that you can set your email client to pick up messages from Pmail
(POP). I don't use it myself, but my Yahoo! account is similar, and it
works that way. If Gmail can't do it, a free Yahoo! (or many other free
webmail companies) account should.
Of course, then you don't get all of the Gmail features (threading and
such), but you don't have to log in with a browser. I, too, think it's a
bit of a pain to get your mail on the web, so I generally only use full
email clients.

I have 4 email accounts (business, personal, MobileMe, web mail) that I can
check through the same interface. It's nice to have one program for
everything, and not worry overly about what account they come from (they're
in separate folders, though).
So, I don't have to fire up 2 or 3 web browsers and log into a bunch of
different accounts in order to get my email (and then re-log in when they
time out). It may only save me 5 minutes a day, but that's enough of an
annoyance for me to look for another way. What I do now works for me, so I
don't see any reason to change it.
Plus, my personal and MobileMe email is available on my Mac and phone, too,
synced through the cloud, so I can get my email on several different devices
(including the web, if I so choose). And it's all synced across devices, so
if I, say, delete a message on my phone, it deletes it everywhere.

I guess I know the answer to this now.
I'm being moderated (probably as a new member), and the moderater hasn't
been working weekends.
For the second week in a row, anything written past, say, noon on Friday
doesn't show up until Monday or Tuesday.
Understood, of course, that if Tom is moderating, he's got a lot on his
plate, and moderating is not his real job. I'd much prefer that he continue
his stellar work, and wouldn't want that to suffer to get a little more
responsiveness here.
Still, the conversation comes to a screeching halt on the weekends, and it
is a little frustrating.
