hey guys,
 =
i tried sending this twice last week and never saw it show up, so this time=
i'm trying "replying" to a list post and just put my own subject line in i=
t and deleted the previous text...we'll see what happens. BUT...
 =
the scaa conference. Specialty Coffee assosiation of america, conference is=
in atlanta, in april. i've never been to one but this one is going to be =
close to me so i wanna go. has anybody ever been to one? think it will be=
over my head? or more for big commercial roasters? the world barrista ch=
ampionship will be held there at the same time so that will be cool too. a=
nyone planning on going? maybe we could have a mini-home roasting meeting =
at the meeting. lemmi know. gimmi your thoughts.
 =
thanks!

They have a one day registration fee for the trade show for $45. I =
would be interested in going up of a group of home roasters were =
getting together to do it.

I went last year as a "consumer" and had an absolutely fantastic time. I
signed up for five different classes: two roasting classes (beginning and
intermediate). Don't be intimated at all....those classes are all about
sharing knowledge and many people in the class may be "in the business" but
also be roasting novices. The only thing which may be new for you is
roasting on commercial equipment.
The conference definitely is geared toward industry folks as opposed to
consumers (roaster or otherwise), but if you'd like to go in order to gain
knowledge, you'll be just fine and walk away with a wealth of info that
would take you months or years to gather on your own. There's just a huge
concentration of coffee info there for you to soak up and absorb. I think
it's most worth it if you take a class or two. I haven't checked the prices
but last year they were $100 each. As a home roaster, you'll be just fine
in the beginning and intermediate roasting courses.
I already have my flight from SFO to Atlanta so will be there for sure.
Where else can you get a roasting lesson from Tom and get taken out to
dinner by Joe Behm? Definitely go...you won't regret it.
Here are some photos which I sent out last year after the conference:http://flickr.com/photos/brz/sets/72157604900085755/It's funny b/c I sent out the exact same question to this list (should I
go?) and got encouraging words....sort of full circle now. :>)

Sounds like a great time. I'm in the Atlanta area, so I'd definitely be
interested in going if there's an organized effort to do so. It would be
more fun than going by myself and I'm not sure I can convince a friend or
the wife to go. :)

I went to the Long Beach Ca. 2007 SCAA convention. Keep in mind you
will be very overwhelmed when you enter the door. Get there for the
grand opening of the vendor floor. It's way bigger that xmas at Macy's
Downtown New York City. At least it felt that way. I went with my
coffee business partner and we ended up not seeing each other very
much because there was so much to see and do and we had different
interests. You will use your cell phones a lot to stay in touch.
Between free classes and a massive floor to walk you will not have a
minute to spare. We went for the entire week long show and never came
close to seeing everything we wanted to. Great Fun any way you go.

Sounds Good. I Called My Friend In Town Who's A Professional Roaster And He's Going But Didn't Want To Commit To anything Yet Because Its So Far Away. I Realized Then That I Needed To Calm Down And Wait Til Time Gets Closer To Make Any Real Plans. I'm Still Uber Excited Though.

Would love to be there, and prolly should make it a point to go. At
this point in my life my FF miles and vacations are spent bicycle
touring so no SCAA for me. I'll look forward to this years pics and
thanks for posting them.

Brian,
In your last picture, with Joe Behm, I see a red Behmor in his booth. Is
there a story to that, or were they just playing with colors?

15) From: michael brown
just to follow up on this old thread. i just registered. it appears if yo=
u agree to volunteer some of your time, you get a discount. the volunteer =
slots are on a first come first serve basis. so i signed up to volunteer f=
or some lectures and labs i can't afford and am paying for the intermediate=
roasting lab that also has a crash course cupping lesson. so i def will b=
e there. another roaster by profession, who consider a friend, is going as=
well. he, OF COURSE, got his knowledge base from sweet marias as well.
