Topic: OT- Geotagging memory cards, (9 msgs / 212 lines)

So Dave & Tom, what do you think of the geotagging memory cards?
I've thought about getting one for my DSLR (a CF card, but same concept),
and I wondered what someone who has used one thinks of it. How is the GPS
reception? Does it get a lock quickly? Does it cause you to take longer to
set the camera up, or can you just pull it out and shoot as you would
normally?
It would be nice to have someone's opinion that wasn't in an anonymous
review on the web, as I don't personally know anyone else that's gotten one.

I'm not quite sure how it works, but it's not GPS. Something about using the
ID of wifi networks in the area. You can just turn the camera on and start
shooting. The first test shots we did (1 of me, 1 of my wife, both at home)
put me across the street, and my wife next door. Pretty darn good I'd say.
We also shot at the Anaheim Arena last night, and it knew where that was
too. I don't know yet what will happen with shots in the wilderness.
So my experience with the geotagging is VERY limited so far, but she's
planning to buy it by subscription for the other eye-fi card.
As far as eye-fi generally, with her Kodak camera, the system is a little
glitchy, but in the end it seems to pretty well. Obviously well enough for
me to hav e bought a second card.

Yeah, that's how it works. A company has mapped the wireless access points
and uses them to triangulate where you are located. It's not perfect and
not everywhere is mapped, but every review I've read has been pretty
positive. It currently only works in the US, I believe (maybe Canada too,
but I'm not sure). I don't have one, but it seems pretty interesting, so I
may pick one up before my next trip. I'd really like something that does
actual GPS, not so much for accuracy as for coverage. Not a lot of wifi
hotspots in the boonies to triangulate.

What does any of this have to do with PDRacers? Are you sure you are posting
to the right group?

I just came across an iPhone application, OnLocation (no affiliation),
that continuously logs your location. With 3rd party software, you can
later add the location data to your photos from any camera based on
the time the photo was taken and where the logger said you were at
that time. I haven't tried it yet, but for $2.99 I just downloaded it.

That would be better, since it uses actual GPS data (on a 3G iPhone), rather
than wi-fi hotspots, which wouldn't work from me. Most of my photos are
taken far from any 'Net access. I imagine that'd be quite a drain on the
phone's battery, though. That, and stitching together the pic and location
data is another step in the workflow.
I guess I'll keep on adding descriptive metadata to my pics so I can figure
out where I took them.

We also shoot a lot far from any electronic access. So I'll be curious to
see how the card reacts...

Before anyone else spends $2.99, I don't really like OnLocation. It
only records your location once, each time you push the button, not
continuously as I thought. Sounds like it would be a pain to pull out
the phone every time I took a picture. On the other hand, the battery
would last longer... There are others, I'll check them out too.

There are several others. A lot of them require you join some on-line
community to upload your data etc. One called "Trails" can do that,
but you can also email your data to yourself. It was $1.99... I'll try
it too.
