Topic: Mandeling --> Tankengon Classic (8 msgs / 145 lines)
1) From: Bill
Don't know if you've seen but Tom is selling some Sumatra Classic Mandheling
but is calling it Sumatra Tankengon Classic, saying that it is a more clear
and specific name.http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.indonesia.sumatra.php#SumatraTakengonClassic2009So I have a question, don't know if anyone but Tom can answer it, but I'm
curious if there will be other coffees with different names that have
classic Mandheling style, or if this is the new, clearer name, for the same
coffee... anybody know?
thanks!

I'm not sure but will comment because I want to know also. I believe
Mandheling is a region in Sumatra. I also believe Tankengon is also a
growing region in Sumatra. Can anyone confirm this for me. I imagine a
google search would confirm this or not.
Good Question Bill

Here is a quote from Tom in the header area of the Sumatra offerings
"Mandheling is an older Dutch spelling of Mandailing, which is an ethnic
group, not a region. "
You can read more there at the Sumatra page.
Hope this helps.

4) From: Bill
The review by Tom has some interesting info. He says that in the area of
Mandheling, the only coffee that's really grown is low-land robusta. and in
the Gr. 1 Mandheling review he comments that it is more an ethnic
distinction than a region... And Tankengon is a city on the shores of Lake
Tawar... so that's what I know!

I just ordered a five-pounder of that bad boy. My caffeinds (husband
and son) who adore anything Sumatran are drooling in anticipation.
Meanwhile, I found myself in the unenviable position of having nothing
roasted and sufficiently outgassed other than espresso to brew--so my
son dashed out into a foot of snow yesterday to retrieve a pound of
Schweik's Ottoman Adventure (Sumatra/Java/Sulawesi blend) from
Metropolis (which I suspect gets at least some of its greens from
SM's). Today was day 1 of its recommended drinkability, so I pressed
up a potlet of it. A little snappy as it cooled, but still chewily
full-bodied and spicy.

Hey Bill - this is it. I explain in the review why Mandheling is such
a bad trade name, but I respect it's history so when we offer a "Gr 1
Mandheling" as we are now, we will preserve it. But the Classic is
really a coffee we source straight from origin, what people call a
"relationship coffee" for lack of better terms, and if it meets our
transparency standards it can be called Farm Gate. We will always try
to offer Sumatra with this type of cup in distinction from the
Lintong/Lake Toba flavor profile, because they are so differnt
really. And I believe now that Aceh/Takengon coffees are the Sumatras
that you can use in espresso, whereas Lintong/Toba have a herbal
character and brightness that, while incredible as drip coffee, are
odd it used in any percentage above approx 25% in espresso.
