Have I missed some listings? Just received a Breville Variable Temperature
Kettle as a 90th birthday present, and wonder why listers haven't been
singing its praises. With settings for 212, 200, 195, 190, 185, and 175
degrees Fahrenheit, it seems to me the ultimate for coffee freaks and tea
freaks alike.

Happy 90th birthday, John. I have been to two 90th birthday parties. Last
year, we just celebrated the first one's 100th birthday. I'm raising my cup
of coffee in your honor.

John,
90...Wow. Congrats for sure. I just turned 60 last October and thought
I was in the upper age range of this list. I started enjoying good
coffee in my 20's but just went big time nuts about 4 years ago. Now
roasting on a commercial level with a small business.
How long have you been enjoying the good stuff. i.e homeroast or
better. I say better, most of those better started as homeroasters. I
don't personally know many.
Cheers and happy birthday.

I share the other listers admiration and congratulate you on 90
years!!! Wow - we should all be so fortunate. As for the Kettle, it
sounds like a nice feature. I tend to boil in an Ibis and if I want
anything less than right-off-the-boil water, I just wait 30 seconds,
or 1 minute. The fact is, I use water right off the boil for both
french press and drip. I feel that there is so much heat loss when
the hot water contacts the brewer, the press, the drip cone, that I
get better results by NOT waiting for proper 195-205 degree water.

John: Congratulations on your recent promotion into the ninth decade.
I had a post in December looking for adjustable temp kettles. Mike McKoffee
searched and came up with this:
"Check out ChefsChoice SmartKettle, digital temp controlled electric kettle.
Cordless like Ibis. Cool. Didn't know about it until you asked, wee bit of
'net searching and there it was just as asked for. Could even be the one you
found but maybe not, maybe it's digital temp control more accurate."
Checked it out and purchased one. Heavy duty stainless. Heats fast.
Digitally set temp and will hold within 2 deg. at that temp. This is a great
kettle. I use it with an AP and green and white teas.
I am only putting this out is case someone is following this thread to find
a kettle and they might want to compare it to your Breville. The Breville
sounds like the kettle I saw at a Superstore in Winnipeg, then couldn't find
in the US. I have also used a kettle sold by Adagio Tea (no competing
products with SM) that has a dial setting that is definitely inferior to the
ChefsChoice. The down side of the exquisite temp control on the SmartKettle
is higher price. It was worth it for me.
Thanks again to Mike McK for leading me to the SmartKettle.

Man, oh man! Within days of the moment when I started getting anal about
waiting till the water was down to 205! I just picked up my thermometer and
thermocouple last week, and have been having all sorts of fun with it. I
have a kettle that must be insulated, because it takes a whole 3 minutes to
drop to 205 from boiling.
Well, that's a relief! I won't worry about it so much. If you say, Tom,
that you get better results with FP and drip without all that waiting,
that's good enough for me!
I hadn't noticed much difference myself, but don't have developed enough
taste chops to be able to trust that one way or another.
