Topic: New Years Cleaning (14 msgs / 229 lines)
1) From: Barry Luterman
I descale my espresso machine June 1 and January 1. This year I had a repair
on my controller and delayed my New Years cleaning until yesterday. I am
enjoying a shot of Monkey now that is outstanding. Every 6 months I am
amazed at how much the shot improves after a thorough cleaning of the
machine. It is insidious how the shot degrades over time du to the
associated build up of grime and scale. One really can not appreciate the
difference a good cleaning makes until after it is done.

Barry,
You may be depriving yourself. Think how much you would enjoy the
improvement if you descaled only once a year!

Barry,
I thought Hawaiian water was naturally soft. I'm surprised to hear there is
a lot of scale build up.

Actually very soft. We bottle it and ship it.I probably could get away with
descaling once a year. However, this year my machine sat for 3 weeks with
water in the boilers without pulling a shot. However, even with the soft
water after cleaning every 6 months I do notice a vast improvement.

Is the Hawaiian "Deep Water" thing still big? I remember seeing an entire
"Water Bar" in one of the malls.

Yes most of it gets shipped to Japan where it sells for $14 a bottle. The
Japanese believe it to be a health aid.

Vast improvement? Over this ? I
guess!
Must be more in the water than volatiles (VOC) if they precipitate out of
solution in the espresso machine.
Rain water starts out as distilled water. The salts and minerals can't
evaporate from the oceans; that's why they're salt water.
The Kodacolor processing laboratory in Chicago had massive water
conditioning equipment around 40 years ago, according to the base photo
hobby shop guys I met from Chi town at Clark AB.
I guess the Philippines is similar to Hawaii- wherever you go, you're always
on top of a volcano of some sort...
Distilled water would never put gunk in your espresso machine- it's just H2O
+ nothing. I used to use it to brew coffee until I started believing all the
commentary. The lime light has never come on in the TechniVorm, that started
out with nothing but distilled.
With the Gold Mesh filter, it's impossible to guess how many pots it has
brewed. I'd do three pots into the pre heated airpot to take to work as a
temp. at Avaya after they cleaned out the whole place.
Sick. 1.4 million square feet- empty. Make a Helluva coffee shop.
One of my partners in crime left his Thermos one night so couldn't visit
7-11 next morning for his fix. "Hey Ray, can I buy some of your
'Coaffee'?(NJ)"
"No- you can have all you want..."
Gorgeous Panama Carmen Estate 1800m +. 3L all gone between 5 of us. Never
wanted to roast themselves, just offer to buy from me.

Every so often, the local news will run a story on how our municipal water
(Boston area) is testably cleaner and safer than over half the bottled water
on store shelves. Of course, all of the tested water meet gov't
standards and all are safe to drink.

FYI-
Tap water is governed by the EPA.
Bottled water is governed by the FDA.
Big differnce in the two standards, I drink filtered tap water, the same
thing the bottled water companies sell to the masses.
Most bottled water does not meet the EPA requirements for drinking water.

Actually the deep sea water is essentially free. It is ice cold from that
depth. It is pumped to the downtown office buildings and hotels and used for
air-conditioning. A little is pulled off for the bottled water trade at $14
a bottle.

Barry, do you clean your machine with detergent periodically? I'm
wondering if the taste improvement from your descaling process is more
to do with flushing gunk out of your grouphead than descaling of the
boiler? Boiler scale, while rather bad for your machine, shouldn't
have a huge taste impact, unless it starts affecting your temperature
profile.
Of course there could also be other minerals building up in there
besides scale (I wonder if your water is high in iron from the
volcanic rock?) that get into your boiler that are cleaned out by the
acid.
