Topic: Androk over the fire popcorn popper Tradition Winner (3 msgs / 82 lines)
1) From: Jim Gundlach
OK,
I just used a random number generator to calculate a random number
for each of the entrants for the Androk over the camp fire popcorn
popper. The winner is: miKe mcKoffee. Mike send me your snail mail
address and I will get the popper along with some chunks of pecan wood
to season the coffee in the mail. To add a side note, Mike was the
winner of the first tradition, a new burr for a Solis grinder back in,
gads I don't remember when, I started this thing.
Another note on the tradition: I started it in an attempt to
improve the quality of discussion in a medium, an email list, known to
promote hostile exchanges. Back when I was an undergraduate at
Oklahoma State University in the late 60's I read a report by an
anthropologist who noted that preliterate societies tended to have
gift exchanges between pairs in relationships that tended to be
problematic, for example, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. I had
come to value this list and thought the introduction of an ongoing
gift exchange might well make it a more civil experience. After a
couple of years I decided to build a teaching exercise for my social
research methods course to test the effect of the tradition. Each
student in the class, typically the class had between 25 and 35
students, was given instructions on how to find the archive for the
list and randomly select one date before and another date after the
tradition started and for each period they were to read all the email
messages for those dates and count the number that could be classified
as "flaming". In class I would set my laptop up to display through
the classroom projector and entered the data turned in by the
students. I would then tabulate the data and calculate a significance
test to evaluate the hypothesis that the tradition gift exchange
reduced flaming on the list. I repeated this exercise in at least
four different classes and they consistently showed that the incidence
of flaming was between a third and a half of what it was pre
tradition. I did not, and never intended to, publish the results for
professional gain. I simply wanted to try to make the list a more
pleasant experience and the teaching exercise was my lazy way, the
students did the hard work while learning for doing actual research,
to satisfy my own curiosity.

That was interesting Jim. We have not had a lot of flame on the list
in a long time. It seems to have settled down for awhile. One of the
reasons for starting the "Cup of the Day." was to try to keep the list
on topic. I get a bit bored with all of the technique and technical
discussions, and no coffee talk.

Hats off to you, Jim
The list has been quite civil and enjoyable lately. My participation
began post implementation of the 'tradition' tradition. The
'tradition' has always given me a bit of the 'warm and fuzzies', and
that keeps me coming back after the occasional awkward and nasty
episode which prompts me to quite for a while.
All in all, quite an interesting and comfortable group of folks.
Just opened a couple of boxes with five 20# bags of Brazils, Sumatra
and Ethiopians. Fun time.
