Topic: Newco OCS Series (9 msgs / 229 lines)
1) From: Jon Segal
I was talking to one of my business colleagues who loves coffee and was
trying to talk him into getting a Technivorm. He balked at the price and
after a couple of weeks came back with a printout of research on a coffee
maker called the Newco OCS series that costs approx. $70 if you are a member
of the Green Coffee Club. Anybody out there have any information on this
drip machine?
It looks like there was a comparison done on the Technivorm KBT-741 versus
Newco OCS-8 at www.ruscelli.com/technivorm_newco.htm .
It seems they both get water to 200degrees and are both approved by SCAA.
The Moccamaster has a better look, but sure seems that the other maker
should make a good cup of coffee.
Any info or comments?

I have an OCS 12, got it with the GCBC discount. It works very well.
I haven't found a swiss gold filter for it yet that lets me make a
full 12 cups without overflowing from the bloom, so I keep it at 10
cups. It makes very good coffee.

That's false, from everything I've read about it. None of them even go out
the factory door in St. Louis that cheap.
Watch for a post from somebody that actually has a new one that he bought
for $70, or even $170. Hold your breath- all distributors have to adhere to
some sort of pricing schedule.
TechniVorm have some restaurant service coffee makers that are pretty
pricey, but they still use multiple stations of maybe 1.5L capacity. No vats
of coffee from an industrial brewer that brews ten gallons per batch.

You're talking out of your hat. I paid $99 before shipping for my
OCS-12 last march using the GCBC discount (they quoted me the 8 cup
for $69 at the time but I went with the 12 cup with the stainless
carafe). It was about another $20 for shipping IIRC. That's a far
cry from $170. I got it straight from Newco using the club discount.
I've given the info to several other people who also picked up either
the 8 cup or the 12 cup using the discount.
<Snip>
but it is *absolutely* not false. Here's your post from someone that
actually HAS a new one that he bought for way under $170.

So sorry, I'm rong again- can I breathe now? I got some hits from others
that either couldn't get one, or that the Newco OCS series was Big Bucks,
even with the plastic carafe.
The consensus was that it brews at 200° F.
Guess Dad was right- "Believe almost none of what you hear, and only half of
what you read."
