Topic: Greetings from Kona (23 msgs / 425 lines)
1) From: Andy Thomas
Actually, I'm in Waimea for a short family visit. I did manage to visit one coffee farm, though, called Sanctuary Mana Ke'a Gardens in South Kona. I'd never heard of it before -- the owner is a friend of a friend. I bought a couple of pounds of green coffee and I will report on the roasting and cupping when I get to it. For now, the greens look very cleanly processed and uniform in appearance and they smell like fresh green coffee. I'm looking forward to checking out this unknown coffee. Sadly, I leave for home tomorrow morning and won't be able to explore other coffee opportunities. I did have a few cups of brewed Kona while I was here, but none were very good.

There's no agricultural issue or restriction taking greens from Hawaii, only
bringing them in. One trip brought back 100# split between two checked
suitcases plus another 50 carry on. The only issue these days is the
airlines baggage weight limits!

Four times brought greens back. Zero times had a problem regardless what
some IMO misinformed growers might say. The Hawaiian agricultural laws
primarily are there to protect the Hawaii habitat keeping stuff out, not
keeping stuff from leaving.

Apparently there is no agg check at the airport terminals.
Does agg check mean you ask the State government for permission to
export or remove green coffee for commerical purposes?
Sounds like the producers/growers/brokers don't want people like miKe
to take matters in there own hands. Could it be the middle man is cut
a little short? Ahhh, so sad.

At the Kona-Kailua airport ag station there is a specific warning about
coffee cherries--greens are not mentioned. However, the regs state
"seeds" are OK. I'll find out tonight when i get on a plane.

8) From: John Letoto
The Department of Agriculture, to the best of my knowledge, makes a
differentiation between coffee cherries and coffee greens for
exporting purposes. I believe green coffee is considered a dried
seed, and thus, is permissible when leaving Hawai'i for the mainland,
whereas coffee cherries that have not been dried and processed are not
allowed to be taken.
Coming in with green coffee is a different matter entirely...

Bob,
Your coffee is for personal use. Say no more to anyone and do what you
need to do.
All we need is a bunch of guilt to spice our great coffee with, not.
Don't take these conversations we have here to be any more than just
that.

Bob, from my limited store of experience, if the greens don't leave the
boat, then they never enter Hawaii. How are going to roast them ?? Popcorn
Pumpers off the fantail? If you end up in Kona I have a few roasters on
hand, and you can always pour them into the RK drum..Terry

We have things you don't want on the Mainland. For example hermaphroditic
tree snails that love to eat the paint off your house.Actually it is much
harder to get things out than in. Going out all your luggage is x-rayed by
the Ag department. Coming in all one has to do is sign a declaration there
is no inspection.

I've had my plate lunches from Young's nearly confiscated when I've

definitely was due to something entirely unrelated to DoA regulations

My bags were inspected -- x-rayed, I guess -- by the Hawaii Dept of Ag at t=

ses through the terminal. There was no problem, nor did I expect a prob=

Last time I left Hawaii, I think I had 5 lbs of greens (Maui) and about 20
lbs of roasted. Not quite miKe numbers, but none too shabby. :) No
problems with the ag checks.
