Topic: Roasting longer not equal to roasting darker (3 msgs / 112 lines)

I used to roast with a heat gun and dog bowl and played around with
stretching the time between first and second. That really made a positive
difference in the cup. I got lazy, though, and didn't like sitting outside
in the cold to stir the beans for 15 minutes, so now I mostly roast with a
HotTop with the digital temperature readout. It's definitely easier for
lazy roasting as I only have to watch the last few minutes of the roast to
decide when to dump the beans, but I have much less control over the course
of the whole roast. I haven't found a way to get it to extend the time
between first and second, but the newer HotTop control boards apparently do
allow that kind of profiling. I'm not very good at taking things apart, but
one of these days, I may buy the upgrade kit.

Agreed. I live in TX so the weather cooperates with outside roasting most of
the time. However, those two weeks of winter we have in February are a strain
on me and my outside only roasting method. If I could afford a Hot Top I
would actually love to compare the difference, Alas...I can buy lots of dog
bowls for the price of a Hot Top..lol

Ha. Classic half-city roil - I believe.
It seems as though I'm adrift in my own transitive.
