It's clearly marked "OT Apple Question". You're allowed to ignore
posts that you don't think you will be interested in. I own a PC but
I am curious about who are some of the Mac users on the list, so I,
for one, am happy to read these offers of help.
I, personally, would rather not read "Net Polizei" messages. You
could have warned us with a header change, or taken it off-list to
the "offenders"..

Great to see so many mac people here! Some how our coffee interests
match with an Apple interest. Glad to see the request.
I, too, Dennis, have used Macs since 1984. Ask away. That's what
makes this list so special and has for so many years. We have lots in
common and lots not.
And to Sam49, we've been dealing with the OT issue for years and years
and decided as long as there is an OT in the subject line and we're
not selling or buying or doing other "no nos" here, we enjoy each
other. We're a community.
I have not written often of late, but I read the list and write when I
have something to say.
Hi, to everyone old and everyone new!

I started with the Apple II back in the seventy's. Darn, I am dating

Then the Mac in 1984. I remember paying around $2000 for that lil box

Adapted for inflation would probably now be over $6000. We come a long

I have to say my quality of life DEFINITELY went up when I demanded that my
family buy macs or else learn to support their own PCs because I wasn't
touching windows anymore.
You can make all the snarky comments about marketing you want, but when
you're not spending 4 hours a week trying to walk your family through
troubleshooting their computers because they got horked AGAIN then yeah, it
definitely DOES make your life better.
Now I get to talk with my mom about important things like finding out how my
niece is doing, how her retirement plans are almost ready, how my sister is
doing, etc instead of getting frustrated trying to explain virus scanners
and spyware to her for hours at a time.
The mac isn't a lifestyle, it's the ABSENCE of a lifestyle if anything...
With windows the stupid damned thing was front and center in our lives
constantly, but once we all switched to macs the computer is once again just
a useful and helpful appliance that sits in the background where it belongs.

Well put Gary. For work I used to support PC platforms. I don't do
that work anymore and I can't wait to own my first Mac. Ira is correct
about an aggressive marketing plan. Fortunately it paid off with a
dependable product. Cost is relative to how much support time I spend
maintaining a "boat", "Car", "house" , oh yes and computers. I still
use PC's for myself but I buy Macs for my grand children.
Now back to my new business and passion, Coffee.

Sandy,
Linux is not for IT experts. It's for folks who get hives from Windows
platforms. So far I my hives are under control. There are days when an
OS replacement is just what the tech doctor prescribes. I love
learning something new. I just don't have time right now for the
learning curve. Although the interface looks just like windows these
days. I venture to say most computer newbees would not know linux was
behind it all unless someone told them. What I find very interesting
is that the core of Mac's OSx is Linux. Might have something to do
with how stable the system is, most of the time. Enough tech talk I'm
thirsty for a good cupajoe.

That's close, but not quite true. Below a layer of NEXTStep, OS X is
actually based on the Mach microkernel and FreeBSD userland Unix utilities,
not Linux and GNU as most Linux distributions have.
I totally agree that popular Linux distributions these days are pretty user

Never got into Macs, but admittedly they are not the target for viruses
and spyware that PC's with Windows are. I don't like the closed,
proprietary system that Apple tries to run, although they are slowly
opening that up. I got a Vista laptop shortly after Vista came out and
absolutely hated it. It now runs a Ubuntu OS which is a user-friendly
version of a linux desktop based on a debian distro. I love it. It's
secure, stable and has a slew of free applications for virtually
anything you would want to do on a computer.

Joe,
While I agree with most of what you've said, the Mac OS is not based on Linux. The core kernels are from the Berkeley
variant of AT&T's UNIX OS (aka BSD).
Part of the reason the Mac OS is so stable is that UNIX has been around since 1969. It's become pretty
bullet-proofoverthe decades. All Apple did was borrow from Job's old Next company and put a GUI cover on it. You can
still bypass the GUI and work directly in UNIX if that's your shtick.
I run my company on a Mac Powerbook using 10.5.6, but I have Windows XP running in a virtual environment using Fusion
when I need to use MS Project or Visio.

yes Unix. I thought we had gone deep enough into techdom regarding the
