Sean,
congrats on the promotion.
Les, great thread. Hope lots of other folks chime in on this one and share
with us.
In college and grad school I drank various coffees from a french press. I
had a few bodums but the glass would break pretty easy during moves, no
matter how hard I tried to not break them... So I found a lexan press and
used that for quite a while. I was drinking *$ or folgers, depending on how
much cash I had. I had heard that whirly blades were bad, so I would have
*$ grind the beans...
so I finally got a real job in 2006, and christmas of that year I bought
myself a Maestro Plus. I researched it a lot and it looked like the best
one to get... so then I started to buy whole beans online. My deal was
cause coffee, buying mainly Colombians. After a bit I found Dean's beans,
which sells only fair trade coffees and what-not. There was a link that
said, "green beans," and I was wondering if that meant a different sort of
cause, environmentally-friendly coffee or something. so I clicked on it,
and the link talked about the benefits of home roasting. I remember
thinking, "ha ha. some people are nuts. You gotta be crazy to do this!"
But I read a few other sites. Ordered Ken Davids book on homeroasting.
Read it through twice. Looked online for any negative comments about
homeroasting. Something that said, "fresh coffee isn't worth the hassle."
As we all know, you can't find anyone that would say that, because
freshroasted coffee IS worth the hassle!
so bought a freshroast in March 2007. from a competitor of SMs, because it
was a couple bucks cheaper. bought beans from a few places online, and also
from a roaster 45 miles away. Had found Sweet Maria's by then, but couldn't
justify the uptick in price. Finally, made a small order to see if there
was any difference.
There was!! and I've been buying coffee from Sweet Maria's ever since. A
couple of bags of coffee from Novo if I stop when I'm in Denver, but only if
I'm feeling lazy. I think Tom's beans are better than theirs. Joined the
list October of 07.
The best thing for me and my wallet? The day after I ordered the
freshroast, the subway across the street was sold to... starbucks! Talk
about saving a ton of money. I would be in there twice a day, shelling out
2 bucks for black coffee. Now I go in there about once every few months to
meet someone... so homeroasting has saved me a TON of cash!
And Sweet Maria's rocks. but we all know that.
