I roasted 8oz of each, one Saturday and one Sunday so there is a little bit
of a rest difference between them, but very little.
Both went to a FC++, almost/maybe a light Vienna.
I used P1 on the B16k. Very straightforward, but I don't have my notes in
front of me.
Same grind, same extraction time, so probably same tamp.
I'm not a high-end espresso setup (poor me) but I think I do better than all
shops I've visited except one (yay me). I have a Saeco/Barista machine with
bottomless portafilter, and an Infinity grinder set on the next-to-finest
Wow, these two espresso are very different from each other.
Ophiolite is a very heavy espresso. I believe it has a large amount of
Ethiopia-like bean in it. I didn't jump on the Koratie band-wagon so I can't
say if it is that or IMV, or just something very similar. I think this would
be a great after-dinner dessert espresso when you need something to cut
through the remnant flavors in the mouth after a heavy meal. But first thing
in the morning?-- too heavy (for me) to wake up to. Major fruitiness. Lots
of crema. I say it is heavy, but it is a narrow-band of flavor but what a
wallop right there where the flavor is. It's like the power of semi-truck
funneled through a fist of a small child.
Auriferous is lighter but full of body, and tons of flavor. Lighter is not
the best word to describe this blend except when compared to Ophiolite. It
did not produce as much crema as the O, but I enjoyed the flavor immensely
(more) this morning compared to the O. It was nutty, it was a little fruity.
It was a very broadband of flavors-- the full spectrum. It was awesome. It
was stupendous. It was magnificent. I wanted more.
So, for this morning, still fighting the sleep coma haze, the Auriferous was
the blend for me. I'm going home at lunch to try this again so this is going
to be quite a caffeinated day for me as I had a cup of my own blend in the
Aeropress at work. Tomorrow I will have to bring some of these two and try
them in the Aeropress for comparison-- I don't know why I didn't think of
that before now.
