Topic: on family and visiting and sacrificing great coffee... (63 lines)
1) From: Lynne
I've been having a few glorious days at my daughter's and her boyfriend's
new apartment in New Haven, CT. My daughter drove me (tell me having your
YOUNGEST do all the driving doesn't feel really WEIRD!!) and the two smaller
dogs (Sammy is only 12 lbs, but it's a stretch actually referring to Emma,
my marshmallow Border Collie as 'smaller', hahaha) on Thursday.
Much to my surprise, their cat, Charlie, has tolerated the two canines very
well. (My dogs stay very clear of her [yes, Charlie is a girl-cat], having
sensed immediately that she is Top Cat in this home!)
They've treated me to New Haven's best: meaning, Frank Pepe's and Modern
Pizza (Sally's was closed for a vacation. Arrgh!) Well, actually, they told
me that there are so many terrific restaurants in NH I'd go nuts here... but
they know I'd feel very uncomfortable accepting their treat for a restaurant
that cost more. Besides, I love pizza just about as much as I love good
homeroast.
sigh... which brings me to my subject.
Coffee. More precisely, homeroast.
I brought a good portion of both decaf and regular with us, roasted to about
full city a couple of days before we left (I forgot to write down the names
- both, I knew, turned out great, IMHNSO.
Unfortunately, their new coffee/espresso maker is ... gulp... made by
Emerson. Sigh.. my daughter bought this (where did I go wrong?! ha - just
kidding).
First morning their coffee was so weak I could hardly taste it. My daughter
was astounded because she made it stronger. She made it stronger on Sat. and
Sun., and I practiced making espresso on this toy. Today I decided to use
filtered water, instead of the tap they use, and was very careful making two
shots in a row. (takes forever for many reasons - one is the Mr. Coffee
whirly blade grinder. Ugh - this is the worst thing ever to get clean -
which they simpley -gasp- don't do at all).
Had a pretty good double shot, which I had black today (I use cream at home,
but I need to stop that for my health and added pounds I gathered over the
winter). It was frustrating to make, because the green light indicating the
optimal temp (for Emerson, ha) would go out now and then, so I'd shut it off
to wait until it heated up again.
I don't know when I'll ever be able to make this trip again (having 3 dogs
and no car makes things difficult), but I think I'll look for a new FP for
myself, and bring my old, now-worn out one here for me.
I've had a great long weekend, though - felt like a real vacation, something
I haven't had in too many yrs to remember! Alas, a great cuppa in the
morning would have made it perfect!
We're going home today (my home) and stopping to see my 92 yr old aunt here
in CT on the way. My uncle passed away this past summer, and this may be my
only chance to see her.
