Many of you showed interest in a website called The Heavy
Tablethat I am writing for. The site launched
today and I have two articles on
the site about coffee. Steve is going to send me some of the Jacu Bird
coffee, so you will see an article on animal processed coffees in the next
couple of months. Thanks again Steve. Below are direct links to the site and
two of my articles. I would love to hear your feedback. Thank you.

My compliments on the articles. Nice style. Next time you come out
west try bumming around in Portland for a week or two.

Hey Mike,I love Portland. Are you from there? I actually tried moving out
there this past summer, but couldn't find a job. I interviewed with
Stumptown and they turned me down. I am still writing for some publications
based out of Portland. Look for a piece I have coming out in the next issue
of Roast Magazine. I quote Tom in the piece. He was a huge help.
Thanks,

Eric -
Great site - and congrats on the articles. Can you give a link to both (I
did a search but couldn't find them) articles?
I love the logo (wondering if it's Photoshopped - or if someone actually
found a carrot like that!)
Sheila Quinn lives in Minnesota! She's publishing a great little local
magazine, bimonthly, now. I submit a recipe for each issue. She's doing a
fantastic job w/the mag, btw - don't think she has time to even breathe
these days, though.
I'm taking Dreamweaver and some other classes to help me with my goals,
which include starting a (hopefully good!) food blog, too.

No I'm not from Portland, 85 miles east on the Columbia, place called
The Dalles. What happened with the Stumptown thing? Not enough
Tattoos ;~) I'll be looking forward to your work in 'Roast', I really
enjoyed your style in the two articles that you linked to. Be sure we
are aware of any other new work, when it happens

7) From: Eric Faust
Mike,Yeah Stumptown was a bust. I went out to Portland for the interview and
with hopes of doing more freelance writing. Unfortunately even with tons of
barista and roasting experience they didn't want me. Funny thing, I don't
have any tattoos. I talked with them more when they came to Minneapolis for
the SCAA and USBC last year. I was a judge at the USBC with the lady (I will
not name) who interviewed me. Hard to think they couldn't make a job for me,
but whatever. I still love the hairbender blend, but have no desire to work
for them. I have remained in Minnesota and have been having a blast pumping
up this industry with my work as a writer and coffee fanatic. The homeroast
list keeps me inspired. Thanks to you and everyone else who knows more about
coffee than most of the full time professionals out there.
In Minnesota I am working at Black Sheep Coffee Cafe, homeroasting, home
brewing and writing. I have connections with Portland still because I have
been working with Roast Magazine and have written for Fresh Cup in the past.

Eric,
I was born in pdx. If you did move out this way I could almost assure
you a job in the coffee industry. Portland is a coffee/roasting Mecca.
Listen to me assure you. Right now I am assuring myself that my
business will be here in the spring. Really though. This coffee
community is a tight one. You have heard from a few of the key players
out west here. You would be a great addition to an already diverse
network of coffee professionals.

Eric,
I can't wait to get my hands on the next copy of Roast Mag.
I stay in touch with all these guys/SweetMaria home roasters/ Coffee Pros./
mostly because I subscribe to SM's list and get posts via my gmail
acct. If you stay up with SM's home roast list, you will get to know
this small but very talented bunch.
Mike McGinness orhttp://www.norwestcoffee.com/has a new
business/cafe in Vancouver Washington.
A serious and experienced roaster/mentor of mine. We both started our
businesses about the same time. Both in the seasonal survival mode for
now but very jazzed about all of it. Especially young upcoming guys
like yourself. This industry depends on the young and passionate folks
like yourself. Did I say that already. See what I mean about passion.
One can't stop talking about it because it is so much fun. Especially
the networking part like this.

Eric,
Not to denigrate Stumptown they have become an institution, but a
casual search of the yellow pages will show better than 500 coffee
establishments in Portland that advertise espresso. I'm sure there
are a substantial number of the *$ establishments located across the
street from each other. On the other hand a casual perusal of the
yellow pages rapidly becomes tiring bouncing thru familiar names of
shops. What I'm saying is that there are innumerable shops pulling
exceptional espresso in Portland and a person wishing to blend
themselves into the local culture could accomplish that at many
different establishments. After all that build up let me say that
there are still shops pulling swill, just like anyplace else in the
country. Until you know the town it's a crap shoot unless you know
some shop names. There are several neighborhoods that the competition
for 'the best' is fierce enough that you can be confident of great
shots everywhere ..... except the ubiquitous *$ peppered even on these
hallowed streets.
Work on those Tatts, and a rainbow dye job on your arm hair would
probably help also ;~). Body art of some really unusual and unique
variations does seem to fit well into the local coffee culture, and I
really don't understand it at all.

Thank you all for the great laughs. Yeah the image of Stumptown is one that
I have had to learn to look past. I don't have tats or body piercing; I
simply wake up in the middle of the night with thought of how the vary my
next profile of an Ethiopian or what would make my project blend even
better. I doubt I will ever get a sleeve tattoo on my tamping arm, but the
Disney character tat I might be up for. Glad that you all are enjoying
reading about food and beverage in the midwest. I wish I was writing for it
more, but for now it is only two articles every two weeks. If any of you are
ever in the midwest I would love to catch up and drink so coffee. Maybe we
could get a tattoo together ;-)
