Morning-
If you've ever wondered how good your coffee really is, as I have at times,
I thought I'd pass this story along as a frame of reference.
We were buying a house here in Portland, OR and closing escrow last week.
Our realtor learned early on in the house hunting process that coffee
roasting was part of what I did and houses with good roasting spaces were
preferred. She also learned that I was happy to bring a thermal carafe of
coffee to morning showings. So when we met at 8:30 AM to sign closing papers
she insisted I bring the coffee. She got out of her car at the title
company's office with her thermal mug in hand demanding her coffee. We had
to wait a few mintues for our escrow officer to show up. Turns out she'd run
out to *$ for a cup of coffee. We promptly told her she wouldn't want to
drink that, that I roasted my own, and we'd brought coffee with us. She said
something to the effect off "let me dump this out and I'll be right there" A
"freshly" poured cup of *$ down the drain, the morning was looking up. I
think the bean of the morning was a Sumatra Mandheling roasted to FC and
brewed in our FP after about 4 days of rest. It isn't my favorite Sumatra,
but it's ok. We poured everyone cups and got down to signing that large
stack of papers. As we finished the escrow officer said, "I think that was
the best cup of coffee I have ever had." Signing papers to buy my first
house was a major event, but having completely independant verification of
the coffee I roast was also really cool.
So for those of you who've wondered if you're doing a good job roasting
coffee or getting the most out of your roast, go find someone who's never
had really good fresh coffee and try it on them. I think we get used to it
and forget that what we produce is in a completely different league than
what most people drink.

Demian, thanks for the story! Congrats on your new house, as well.
Wednesday I was needing some caffeine at lunch; no pop around, so settled
for a couple cups of "church coffee." ugh...
yup, can't complain about my delicious homeroast, that's for shore!

Hi Demian,
I'm Mark and am new to the list. I live in Milwaukie. Where about in Portland do ya live?
Currently I am using a poppery II for roasting but soon to pruchase a Behmor. I've just gotten into home roasting but have had a long time passion for GOOD coffee. My passion for the brew of heaven is so evident that my wife has called me a coffee snob! IT's a name I wear proudly.
I'd love to connect with ya some time to pick your brain about coffee roasting.
By the way I loved your story!
Mark

Hi Demian,
Nice to see another Oregonian on the list. We live in Zigzag and started
roasting 4 years ago this month. Started with HG/DB/BBQ side burner, but
have been using a Behmor exclusively since December. I work as an "IT nurse"
for Kaiser and attended a software certification class a couple of weeks
ago. I brought my homeroast Zigzag blend for the whole class every day and
they loved it. I brought along some ginger crisps the first couple of days
and some almond and chocolate cookies the next day to nibble along with the
coffee. I was ill for all of last week's class and when I called in, they
missed me, but missed the coffee more. The last classes are week after next,
so will need to make it up to them. I even made a few sales to those who are
quickly becoming addicted.
Just about to buy another 60 or more pounds of coffee and always check the
list for nuggets first.
Enjoy your home and take care,
Ann
