Topic: Coffee shop(s) recommendations in SF Bay area? (7 msgs / 178 lines)
1) From: Greg Hollrigel
Ahh, the Baltimore message reminded me that I should ask the same question
for my trip. Thanks Mac.

I'll be up in the East Bay area (in Pleasanton - over the hill from Oakland)
in a few weeks. I wanted to go on a bit of an espresso/coffee spending
splurge (beans and drinks). Looking to sample new espressos and coffees
from different shops.

I've heard of Ritual Roasters and Blue Bottle(?), and I was thinking of
going to those two in San Francisco.

Any comments on either of these generally, or any other recommendations in
SF, Oakland, or in the Pleasanton/Dublin/Walnut Creek area?

Thanks,

Greg

The other main spot in the city is Four Barrel. Unfortunately, the
East Bay doesn't have much to offer for good coffee.

Personally I wouldn't go to Four Barrel at the expense of Blue Bottle or Ri=
tual. I was there a few weeks ago and was excited to try them out. The sh=
ot I had was bitter/burned tasting and the capp wasn't any better. It may=
have been an off moment, but I don't think I'd risk it again just because =
BB and Ritual have always been consistently awesome in my experience. After=
that I walked down to Ritual and the SO shot they were offering at the tim=
e was awesome and turned my day around.

Greg,
This article was just in the SF Chronicle, check it out below.
If you are going to go anywhere it must be Sweet Maria's in Oakland.
Maybe you could have one of the crew make you an espresso while you are
there.
Cheers,

Hi Greg,
You might want to call ahead if you're thinking of visiting Sweet Maria's.
They're mostly an Internet operation, and not generally set up for visitors.
There's no storefront, no cafe, no reception area. It's very much a
functional working space.
If you just show up, you'll almost certainly be greeted by quizzical looks
from people who've got a lot of other things to do. If you call, then maybe
there will be a moment when it's appropriate for visitors to be there, and
someone can be on hand to show you around. But it should definitely be their
option.
I don't mean to speak on Tom's behalf. I was lucky enough to attend one of
last summer's cupping classes (which was GREAT, btw), and generally go to
pick up my orders there because it's a pretty quick drive-by for me. It's at
the random times when I'm picking up orders that I know that the focus is
much more on providing great green coffee for mail order customers, with
minimal attention for walk-ins.
Give them a call, though. They'll be able to tell you their policy on
visitors a lot better than I can. They're great, friendly people. It's just
that they're on a mission. For us!

Just visit the Queen City of the Rockies. I could try to pull a shot, just
BYOEM... I got superb IMV- complex, roasted coconut, nuts, fruity as a
Steinway. Day 4 is Mo' Betta.
Thank Heaven for Ethiopia and Fiver samplers...

Thanks everyone. That article is perfect. Thanks for the link. Also,
yeah, I was considering the Sweet Maria's visit, but I know from their
website that it looks more like it's running on agenda to give us the
goods. I may call them to see if I can visit, but I'll play it by ear. I
don't want to take away any of their time that they could use to prepare
greens for the rest of you. ;-)
Again, much appreciated, now it's going to be a great trip!!!
