Hee hee - we used our breadmaker so much that we're in dire need of a
replacement breadpan. I guess it's a personality type - perhaps the same
characteristics that move a person to bake their own bread also motivate
a person to roast their own coffee...
I kinda like being on the fringe with the highest quality coffee
available, but at the same time I wish more people were involved. Much
of the specialty coffee being produced is done so fairly ecologically -
under a canopy and perhaps organically/uncertified organically.
Additionally, I would expect the farmers probably make slightly more
than the bulk-coffee workers, but then I could be wrong. If there were a
higher demand for specialty coffee and a growing awareness about how it
was produced (half of the attraction to specialty coffee for me),
perhaps changes could be made in the production of coffee as a whole.
Why raze a rainforest when coffee is perfectly happy growing under the
canopy? And why should the people that grow/produce our coffee have to
live in flimsy shanties with dirt floors and no running water? So it's a
catch-22 - I like doing something that relatively few people are doing,
but wonder if more people doing it would be more beneficial to the
producers and ecology. But then, under greater demand they could always
just slash and burn and grow crop-style, so there's no telling...

I figured homeroasters would still use their bread machines hehe... noticed
I used the phrase "How many of your FRIENDS still use their bread machine?"
I wouldn't dare compare this group to the average gizmo addict :) (at least
the homeroasters that belong to a homeroasting list) Even though I ended my
last post with "who wants to buy a slightly used bread machine" I do use it
occasionally, I kinda threw it in for narrative effect heh...

Yea, it is neat to think that little ol' me has the possibility of brewing
some of the best the world has to offer in such an immense industry. I also
appreciate the fact that the shade grown/ecology friendly stuff is of better
quality. Could you imagine a world where it was the other way around.
Fanatics like me would be first in line to chop down them trees... (ok..
ok... a joke, I love those trees as much as the next person!, feel free to
tell me how lame it was personally)

coffee.
Ahh yes, but all things being equal, I'd be willing to bet that your
percentage of hyper-specialty beans are higher than the specialty beans.
This in relation to standard specialty shops can go without saying.

months.
Ok, this is disconcerting. This is the real clue in regards to availabilty
vs. homeroasting popularity. Wow, what a challenge for Tom when
homeroasting hit's that fame window.
