Hi All,
This is spinning off from the 'Sleeper Alert' thread, where we were
discussing several generations of Bali and then two generations of Brasil
Ipanema Tree-DP.
The Bali 'Blue Krishna' Kintimani has now entered the exalted status of
'celebrity bean' this past week, up there with the IMV, and, obviously, the
Yellow Bourbon.
I was wondering how we keep track of these once they enter the hallowed
halls of our collective memory, and there's a new crop that comes in with
the same name. That's happening right now with a less exalted bean, the
Brasil Ipanema Tree-DP, which only recently became unavailable, but even
more recently became available as a new crop.
Is there a common parlance here on the list for talking about generations of
beans? Maybe not so much for the superstars like Yellow Bourbon (which, at
one time, must have been known by a more fully descriptive name) that speak
for themselves. But, for example, for the Ipanema Tree-DP, do we say class
of '08 and class of '09?

Yes.Lose the "class of"
I just resurrected the 55w vibe pump on the Ca/De presso Luxe, so it's not
dead anymore. Q-Tip of organic non-corrosive flux on the terminals, followed
by the hot thing and some 53/ 37 solder. Got 5 # of  0.015" in my toolbox
from SMT rework days. Wurkt good.
(It was getting solid power, but no vibe/ no pump action. What's the most
likely failure point of a Buzzer? Electrically, it's only a coil of wire +
the terminals. I can handle Simple.) Right.
Note to self: Wouldn't take a rotary pump machine on a bet. When the motor
starts, it takes a locked rotor current surge- no such thing with a vibe
pump. Pure inductance = no current surge.
The IMV is for espresso, but Depresso quit before I got to roast any of the
Fiver. Then I got to thinking- "This machine is too simple- only a couple of
steps up from a wedge. Stop despairing and fix the thing." Was too dumb to
fix the cracked valve casting with JB Weld and let it cure while I plotted
my attack on the pump... I Blew it- been dry for a month!

Hmmm - I want to nominate too. There are coffees that in retrospect 
turned out better than I had thought... a lot of that "retroactive 
view" has to do with 1. that they held up well over time, meaning 
probably that they were really well processed and dried, and 2. that 
after many roasts on many machines, new qualities emerged that were 
even better than the multiple roast levels done for reviewing.
 From this past week, I what comes to mind is Panama Carmen 1800 
meters. I roasted the very tail end sample of the last bag, and it 
was so vibrant and fresh. Panamas have had trouble in the past with 
going baggy early (i remember a Panamaria once that did, and a La 
Berlina that we had to eat a bag and a half because it showed 
bagginess. In fact, someone I know has the regular Carmen from the 
rest of the farm, and said it wasnt fairing well, but this 1800 
sample was really stellar. Another is Kenya Ndaroini in vacuum 
packing. I characterized it as " a mild Kenya" but each time I roast 
it, I get more and more out of it. It's in Vac Bags / boxes and 
cupping it against the new crop auction lots it is just as vivid and 
clean. That's why we are getting a huge amount of Kenyas from the 
middle to later part of the crop in vacuum bag/ boxes this coming 
year. Anyway, since I am always re-roasting things in stock or out of 
stock, I look back at samples a lot, as well as look forward.  my .02

Tom,
That is good to hear because I have 5 pounds of Panama 1800 just
waiting to be roasted.  I was planning on having the first pound of
that 5 pounder as my Easter coffee this year.  I am also sending a
pound of it to my brother as his "50th Birthday" coffee gift.  I have
always liked the Panama 1800.  I am out of Kenya right now, so I am
looking forward to the new crop.  For those who have "missed out", it
has been a long time since I have tried to keep up with Sweet Marias
offering list.  With all that SM brings in, you had better figure out
your likes and dislikes, or put self limits on your stash.  You will
either be disappointed or over stocked.  I have a number of Countries
that I just don't order from.  I am not going to say which ones
because it has nothing to do with the coffee.  It helps me to keep the
stash under control.  I know I am missing some great coffees, but that
is just the way it goes.   There are coffees I always like to have in
the stash.  I have spent a lot of time and thought as well as cupping
to figure out what I really like.  This is why I homeroast, and why I
don't always share what I like.  However when a coffee stands out like
the Bali  'Blue Krishna' Kintimani, I feel like I need to share this
discovery with the list.  I have never had a bad coffee from Sweet
Marias.  I have had some real ho hum coffees sent to me by tamper
customers.  I am not interested in ho hum!  Thanks Sweet Marias for
bringing us true to origin coffees.

I've just roasted up a bit of the Kenya Ndaroini two days ago. I've had it
green for a bit, and had put off roasting it until 1) I got over the
roasting slump I was in for most of February, and 2) I learned how to
pronounce "Ndaroini."
I got over the slump, and have at least two pronunciations that might be
relatively close! :-)
It was pretty bright hot off the roaster, as you'd expect, but "mild Kenya"
sounds about right. Tomorrow will mark 72 hours, and will be my first test
of it as it's intended to be drunk.
Vacpot, of course. I'm not a darksider.
Looking especially forward to tomorrow's cup with your endorsement, Tom!
