Hi everyone,
Just had a cataclysmic roast with a new batch of Nicaragua Limoncillo
Pacamara Dry-Process. Roasting in my IR2, I measured the normal 150 grams,
dumped into the IRoast and started my normal roast; 3 mins @325, 4 mins @375
and 3 mins @425. I noticed about 5 mins into the roast that it wasn't going
anywhere - these are VERY LARGE beans. At the end of the roast, it was
obvious that the iroast was not pushing these beans through the center
column uniformly, hence a very uneven roast resulted - some beans French,
some almost white. I can only assume that with this large bean, you have to
measure by volume rather than weight. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

roast. A key to batch size fluid bed roasting is bean movement at the start
of roast. Adjust batch size so the bean movement is approximately the same
as successful batches. If possible test bean movement briefly with zero
heat, find the appropriate batch size, then weigh it for future reference.
There is no one correct batch size all beans for little fluid bed roasters
running "stock". Differing bean sizes, shapes, density and moisture content
all effect bean movement and hence optimal batch size.

If you see this happen on the IR2, you can sometimes shake the  
roaster a bit to get some movement, then as the beans get lighter (in  
weight) they tend to fluidize better.

Bob,
With my IR1 I found that roasting more than 130 g of any bean resulted in 
poor agitation.  It just wasn't worth shaking, rattling and rolling the 
roaster to move the beans around if I tried greater mass.  FWIW, I've 
roasted 130 g of the exact bean you mention successfully in my IR1.

Maybe there was so much chaff that the collector was plugged up? It  
was a DP coffee?

Bob,
I've roasted this exact bean in the IR2. I start with 120 grams (4 oz.) on
large beans or beans with lots of chaff.
My NLP-DP has turned out very nice with the same profile of flavors in the
cupping review.
The IR2 is sensitive to line voltage. Lower line voltage will greatly affect
heat and fan power. I happen to have very high line voltage (125v). I still
find that big beans get a more robust circulation with lower batch sizes.
