Topic: Dogs and Chocolate (18 msgs / 354 lines)
1) From: David Jewett
I hate to jump in on this, but...
My wife is a veterinary technician, and according to her, all chocolate is
toxic to dogs, but not all chocolate is created equal. Yes dogs eat whole
bags of Hershey's kisses and other chocolates, but most of the time those
chocolates are milk chocolates and are mostly butterfat and some cocoa. The
darker the chocolate, the more toxic it can be assumed to be, and the most
lethal of all is Baker's chocolate.
Did you know that in babies that caffiene has a half life of about 100
hours, compared to a few hours in adults? Caffiene citrate is used to treat
neonatal apnea and works to regulate and deepen respirations in premature
infants. Did you know that Tylenol is extremely toxic at a dose of 140mg/Kg?
Next time I get to work, I'll find out the lethal dose of caffeine and see
if it says anything special about dogs.
But anyway, toxic is toxic, but it's relative.

Ok, this has got to stop. I'm spending too much time thinking about how
to deal with the yappy little drop-kick dog down the block. "Here
puppy, want some nice, delicious Baker's chocolate. Heh, heh."

Just remember, there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Ditto for the screaming, ill behaved brat that is always in the grocery store line ahead of you. It's usually not the fault of the poor lad, but the pathetic parents. Reach out and slap THEM.
Both our dogs have "diplomas" for Puppy, Basic, and Advanced obedience classes. With the amount of energy the average English Cocker has, if they had no discipline or training, it would be havoc in the house (and many times, it still is!)

Speaking of idiots, did anyone hear about the lady (somewhere down south I
believe) who beat up another lady in the grocery store because the other
lady had 13 items in the 12 item express lane? America the beautful, land of
the free...

13 items in a 12 item line? Give me a break. Is it a law? Is it meant to =
be exact? Do you really count the number of items of the person in front =
of you?
One time, standing in line, we were grabbed by a cashier who took us to =
the express lane, no other shoppers at the time but we had a FULL cart. =
What, were we supposed to say, "I'm sorry but we can't do this, it's =
against the law of the line". By the time he was done there was a line =
of evil looks.
Cast judgment, search and destroy, the American way. How about getting =
along and appreciating where we live and that we have the freedom to =
stand in a line and buy the things we want.
We have another insane issue, supposedly parking spaces marked Compact =
are only for compact cars. A local news team made a big deal about it a =
while ago asking the compact drivers how they felt about it. What, =
compact cars are handicapped? (No, I don't drive a Suburban)
It's insane.

Speaking of espresso...
I've always adhered to the dogma - let your beans rest after roasting.
Until tonight. I ran out of Monkey Blend, and had to pull a shot with
some that I just roasted this afternoon. And, it was darn good!

Thomas...I don't think there is any danger of 'not' learning about coffee on
this list. But this list has become much more than just a 'list'. It is a
community of real people. To be quite honest, I appreciate and enjoy the
little vignettes into the lives and personalities of list members. Coffee
is just a great drink without good friends and great conversation to enhance
the experience.
I'm not encouraging the list to become a 'catch all' for topics, but I think
we can all exercise a bit of tolerance and accept sidebars into
pseudo-coffee topics from time to time. The posts that are all freaked out
about someone's posting style bug me much more than friendly, tangentially
related posts (not inferring that you are getting all freaked out ).
As to those 'bailing' from the list...let 'em bail. Here, it's 'Survival of
the Fittest' .

Ed Needham

Mike,
It's not about taking heat...or smoke..love that smell in my hair and
clothes!! It could be about respect and manners....remember the
complaint about Tom's posting being so slow....let's respect Tom's
traffic load and purpose of paying the way for this site. This is
different than alt coffee where one can glance over stuff and read what
applies, ignoring the rest, here we are basically being spammed OT more
than half of the time and when we make mention of it we are dumped on
with dog poop cleaned stale beans moving at the speed of a ups truck
through an express lane behind a little old lady buying millstone coffee
that she forgot to grind while searching for her out of town checking
account although she no longer has the required drivers license for
identification to use said check and all she can think about is firing
up her percolator and knitting a sweater for her dog so we can wag its
tail.....now....behave boys or the boss will shut this good thing
down.....now for another cup....before I wax eloquent :>)

Ed,
This has always been my sentiment, also. You have stated it well. I often
find the (not really)off-topic subjects to be much more interesting than
the interminable posts on how many ways to clean an Alp or roast a
particular bean...Let's face it, the final arbiter is taste, and as the
Romans said, there's no disputing it (roughly translated, of course).
I think some folks come to this list looking for a database of "facts" and
techniques. These are certainly here, but there is also a sense of
community and sharing...witness the responses to Wandering John's plea for
a good cup of coffee in Vallejo. If we wander away for awhile, so what? We
always get back, the richer for the wandering..
I've learned a lot about the process of roasting coffee, but I've also
learned a lot about the folks on the list who, for the most part, are very
generous with their time, info and insights. It's the insights I find most
interesting. If this ever becomes a list of subjects relating ONLY to the
techniques of roasting coffee, I, for one, will probably un-subscribe from
the list...
Anyone wanna restart the Kopi Luwack thread? Oops, that's currently running
again, isn't it? My bad... :-)
Ciao,
Angelo
