Topic: Ethiopian coffee exports halted (11 msgs / 316 lines)
1) From: Michael Wascher
it sounds like there's a spat between the Ethiopian government and coffee
growers/exporters. How does that affect our supply?http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/25/ethiopia-stops-coffee-exports/http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid 601116&sid=aIQmZFWn085s&refer=Africa]

In case nobody has noticed, the coffee is moving. The coffee was always
moving, but the largest exporters (who export coffee we never buy) were cut
off. The problem since December is different--that all coffee sold must go
through the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange. I don't know how that has
impacted the coffee we buy, but I'm sure it's been discussed at some point;
this isn't a new development. And as always, there's more to the story than
what a couple disinterested journalists manage to dig up for a story.

6) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
The ECX issues are not resolved, but it is not like coffee isn;t =
shipping. The problem is that good lots are being classified under =
their new (more detailed) naming system and sold without the name of =
the producer. The relationship link is broken. Our main sources feel =
like there are ways to work through this, but some of if it is still =
TBD. A few of our direct small lot purchases might not work this =
year, but we already have the Dry Process Korate (and wet-process =
Korate) booked, as well as others. It's not like there won't be good =
Ethiopian coffee, but I agree that the ECX is completely screwy, the =
way it treats coffee like soybean lots, as a generic exchangeable =
commodity.

I hate this government BS; the only people who are hurt are the farmers who
grow, pick and process their coffee.
I will need to check but isn't coffee the 2nd largest commodity in the
world? yes, of course, with the marijuana being the largest cash crop...

On another note, you cupping video from youtube was a big hit with the

10) From: Edward Bourgeois
Unfortunately buyers like Tom and some of our other friends are a
minority. When your a farmer with a perishable crop and isolated your
pretty vulnerable to being ripped off over and over again it then
often makes farmers play tricks too. I've seen it happen consistently
in this country too. I have been offered prices below the prices paid
in the early 1800s and with a straight face no less. Then there was
the year my stock placed 2nd overall in north america and a commodity
buyer said he could offer me a little more if my quality was
better(not knowing my show record). I hope their government can help
with the corruption. I wish ours could too.
