Topic: Dead Mazzer Major (5 msgs / 118 lines)
1) From: miKe mcKoffee
Or so it seemed! Few months back purchased a couple used Mazzer Majors from
a reputable known source. Took one out of the box yesterday for the first
time to check it out and begin disassembly for thorough cleaning, painting
prep etc. Plugged it in and turned it on to make sure it worked. No problem.
Turned it off, turned it back to start again and wouldn't start again!
Unplugged it, tried again. Nadda. Tried half a dozen times. Now this was
last night after dinner. Figured I'd been unlucky and it croaked on me after
one growl.
Then today it hit me you DUMMY, it's an AUTOMATIC Major. Which of course
means once grind initiated won't initiate again until after 12 flicks of the
doser. Duh. I knew I'd be disabling the dose counter and auto-fill features
when taking it apart but temporarily forgot about the features! Yeah, it's
working just fine exactly as it was designed to work...
Brain fart 101:-)

Wow, that's interesting. If you unplug it does it then forget, or is
it a mechanical actuator that has to move 12 steps prior to reenabling
the grinder? My guess is this is mechanical. Maybe I should start
scanning the lists for dead majors ;)

No brain in a Major, just a couple micro switches.

Yes, mechanical dose counter controls micro-switch which enables auto-grind
fill sensor micro-switch grind on until doser filled. Then auto-fill switch
turns grind off back to 12 count...

I've heard that on some future commercial espresso machines in
development will have OBD units like are in cars for repair diagnosis.
