Topic: A good explanation of the Ethiopia situation from (12 msgs / 765 lines)
1) From: Doug Hoople
What a terrible catastrophe! How could anyone in their right mind develop a
system like this? I can't imagine a single buyer wanting a single bean from
that central store! It's just as screechingly wrong as it could possibly be.
All they need now is for the Ethiopian Agriculture Department to issue a
report trumpeting the outstanding and brilliant success of this program.
Cultural Revolution, anyone? I was going to say, "At least no one will
starve," which is what they did by the millions in China in the 60s. But
that only accounts for the consumers, not the producers. The farmers could
suffer terribly from this.
Not just a catastrophe, but a tragedy in the making.
I hope they fix it soon.

5) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
This will be a very odd year, but remember, it doesn't mean there
wont be good Ethiopia coffees.
Also, it has been a big kink in our micro lot plans since I was there
6 weeks ago and had approved really nice lots that cannot ship.
However, we have found some alternate small lots through the FTO
Unions, which all produce really nice coffees. It is true, shipments
will be delayed by about 1-2 months from the usual April -May-June
arrival dates. We should see our earliest new crop lots in late April
earliest.

8) From: Tom & Maria - Sweet Maria's Coffee
We found a good Uganda but it is not that one. I tested the one =
mentioned and it had a high defect count, a lot of quakers. There's a =
lot of quality initiatives for smaller lots out of Uganda, and Coffee =
Quality Insitute has some good funding to work there. What we have =
coming is not a small lot, but it doubles as a really great SO =
espresso. Should be here in 10 days, maybe a bit less (?)
As far as Uganda as an Ethiopia substitute, no, not by a longshot. IMHO

10) From: Seth Grandeau
Tom, the article quoted an official saying that specialty coffee was only 3%
of the market and the Royal Coffee guy said he doubted that. Do you have
any idea how big a share specialty coffee is? If it really is that low,
then I can see the gov't not caring about it, which would bode poorly for
us.

That's a big art of the debate. When I was there at the Harar
conference the ECX representative said it was 2-3% and most people
think it is more like 30% to 40%. There still is a lot of low grade
coffee, Lekempti, Djimma, Ghimbi as well as lesser or off-grade
Harar, Sidamo etc.
BTW: I just received an email that 3 of our small lots actually made
it through the ECX so there is a ray of sunshine here...
