Topic: CBI/Target strikes again at COE Colombia (5 msgs / 121 lines)
1) From: Edward Bourgeois
Just saw the auction results for the COE Colombia and CBI/Target
strikes again and bought the 1st and 2nd place lots. I tried some of
the Guatemala COE they bought last year and their roast looked good
but of course not being fresh it had lost all it's nuances. Any decent
Guat would have tasted the same. I had hoped this was a one time thing
but it wasn't. What a waste/crime to buy great coffee and let it go to
ruin because they have no way to keep it coming in fresh to their
stores. Cryin shame!!!

I know where you can get carefully harvested and processed coffee. Not even
roasted yet, still green, so if you could find some way to roast it
yourself, it would really be fresh.
Then you could dispense with the ersatz coffee purveyors. You'd need some
way to grind the coffee beans after you roasted the green seeds. Some people
abhor coffee unless it has been done their way.
Good enough is not good enough for some- they want more.
It's always something.

I noticed that too. There was one lot I really liked there, but we
cupped them against our vac pack Colombias and weren't thrilled
overall. I am really trying to cross-reference our CoE purchases
versus the coffee farms we already work with, and if I can't pick out
a CoE in blind cupping against ours, I won't participate. I want to
support the program, but after a long discussion with another
roaster, it sorta came to me that the coffees MUST stand on their own
legs; it can't be a charity situation.
By the way, I don't put a ton of stock in the SCAA Coffee of the Year
(COTY) competition held at SCAA, but our micro-lot from Huila
basically won the whole thing. Esmeralda Gesha was number 2! This lot
is super small, and will be here in 2 weeks.

That appears to be a general trend among the more seasoned roasters,
especially those that already have established connections with
Colombian growers. From what I gathered many roasters were in the same
place as you Tom. Heard as much from Gimme! and Intelly. I suspect
that increased US participation will likely come from groups of smaller,
up and coming roasters that haven't had as many years of direct trade
building efforts like you and others have. Heard an interesting analogy
of the CoE as an entry tool to direct from source buying.
Good idea to put these against other microlots--wish I would have had
time to do that--have a few of your 4-stars from last year that would
have been a great comparison point. Thanks for the insight, Tom
P.S. Enjoy El Salvador next week.

Thank you very much for the heads up! I have to say, I do still like
the Gesha a lot, but I'm just not as thrilled by it this year and last
as I was 2 years ago. I don't know why. Maybe I'm overroasting it.
