Dismiss you as a malcontent? I think not. Thoroughly enjoyed your review and
feelings on this year's SCAA. I do hope you sent said feedback to the powers
that be at the SCAA, not just your website. Don't feel a 10th as bad for not
being able to afford $ or time to attend...
Last year I made grumblings about Krups being the "Official Sponsor" of the
2008 USBC that were met with disdain by most all on the Barista Guild forum.
Krups and cutting edge World Class espresso? Does not compute. I knew full
well that their sponsorship had absolutely nothing to do with furthering
quality espresso in any form be it equipment or bean simply a means of paid
advertising and revenue for the SCAA. =
This type of thing is why right or wrong I actually did not renew my SCAA
business membership. In 18 months I saw absolutely zero benefit for the
small roaster and or café owner. Everything seems geared for "the big boys
with bucks". Not those struggling to further grow true Specialty Coffee in
their local neighborhood businesses. =

first not know. And in knowing know I know not. Each Personal enlightenment
found exploring the many divergent foot steps of Those who have gone before.

And the SCAA has completely walked out on consumer education and the
concept of a cmembership group.

Thank you very much for your SCAA incite. I also have not renewed my
membership. My reasons not to are mounting. If the current trend by
the SCAA continues we might reach a boycott boiling point. Ohhh, did I
say the "B" word. I love coffee conventions and coffee fests for the
sharing and networking but if the SCAA does not recognize small
roasters as the foundation of this industry not to mention leaders in
innovation and R&D then it may be time for a new organization with a
focus where it should be. Now I vented. I think I'll eat a

Another recent Specialty 'Coffee' Association of America move "that made me
go hmmm" was awarding 'redespresso' the "Best New Product -Specialty
Beverage" at the 2008 SCAA Conference Expo. Sorry, Rooibus Herbal Tea AIN'T
"espresso" I don't care how you extract it by any excepted industry
definition of the term espresso!
But then since last year Krups was the Host of the United States Barista
Competition it's no surprise Rooibus was deemed espresso at the Expo...
