Topic: Coffeefest vs SCAA convention (9 msgs / 199 lines)
1) From: Sean McIntyre
I read Tom's review of the SCAA convention with great interest. A local
friend who is a professional roaster tells me that he only attends the
Coffeefest held in Seattle every year. Since I am from Seattle and have
family and friends there, this might be a worthwhile trip for an amateur
homeroaster like myself. I'm interested in getting some general opinions
from list members on the value of attending Coffeefest for us "hobbyists".
For instance, I'm still working hard to overhaul the La Spaziale New EK
machine that a friend gave me and could certainly benefit from networking
with individuals that know commercial espresso machines. I'm also beginning
to dream of the day when I have enough money saved up to purchase a
professional sample roaster and would like to warm up to that point by
getting to know some of the small roasting machines on the market.
Warm regards to all, especially list member Jim. Get well soon!

CoffeFest in Seattle might be worth it, but other CoffeeFests have
been very, very sad affairs. The best prof. level coffee event is the
Roasters Guild Retreat. It's just outside Portland Or this year, not
so far away!

I think that professional roasters would have very different focus
from homeroasters.
What we need is more homeroast events, maybe with participation from
professional roasters;
What we don't need is homeroasters crashing professional roaster events.

Who said anything about crashing an event. Tom was only pointing out
the educational benefit of exposure or being able to see those with a
wealth of experience roast coffee. Professionals love to share and
promote this wonderful art form.

It's too bad there's not a Homeroast Association.
When I was an active beer home brewer, I joined the AHA (American Homebrew
Association) and attended a conference in Oakland with tastings,
competitions, information about the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program)
and a special dinner prepared by Michael Jackson, the food critic including
rye bread rolls made with pilsner and a chocolate stout cake among other
delicacies paired with complementary beers. It was loads of fun. Of course
there were vendors on the convention floor as well. It's been twenty years
so I don't know how the AHA and the magazine Zymurgy fares these days, but I
found a link that shows they're part of a brewers association:http://www.beertown.org/homebrewing/zymurgy_magazine/index.html.It would seem that the home roast community could support something like
this with cupping classes, roasting and barista competitions, vendors, etc.
Maybe a home roast association could be under the umbrella of the SCAA or
maybe it'd be better not to be.
Oh, the convention that I went to was in Oakland, hmmm.

Yakster,
Lets pass this on to Tom, our host, and see if he has any thoughts on this.

I thought only "professional" roasters were allowed at those.
Alright, I'm just jealous.
