Topic: Yet another reason to drink home roast... (5 msgs / 120 lines)
1) From: Kris McN
So, I'm listening to the May 4th Fresh Air podcast. It's an interview with
an entomologist who studies dung beetles. Near the end of the interview
they get chatting about whether or not even entomologists can stand
cockroaches, and he tells an anecdote about a colleague who was fanatical
about only getting coffee from shops that grind their whole-bean coffee in
the shop. They would spend an inordinate amount of time looking for coffee
shops for this fellow. Turns out, he used to work with cockroaches back in
the day and had developed a severe allergy to them (which is apparently
fairly common particularly in urban environments), so much so that he
couldn't drink preground coffee. Apparently, there are enough cockroach
carcasses that get ground up in the large lots of coffee to trigger an
allergic response!!
Good gravy! I know you guys don't need any more reasons, but this could be
additional ammunition when trying to convert your stubborn relatives who
cling to their Folgers, or whatever.
You can listen to the full interview if you care to:http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId3775784Best,

Eeeeyuck! Just tell the holdouts you know the real reason it's called
Foulgers.

Better start keeping livestock pens and Victory Gardens in your yards, if
this is a such big surprise and worry.
I've never once talked to anyone working in a food processing plant that
didn't have a pile of such stories to tell.

Well of course I'm completely aware that bug parts end up in our food. The
FDA has standards for allowable parts-per-unit whatever. Sure. Unavoidable
for the most part. It just became a little more visceral when it's clear
that it's *cockroach* parts, rather than some unnamed "bug", and that
they're prevalent enough to cause an allergic response from brewed coffee.
