That's what rss is for. Add a forum with rss and a decent rss reader and y=
ou are rocking. Plus some forums actually allow for a mailing list to work=
 with the forum itself.

I think both forums and lists have their place, and which you want to
use is more or less a matter of preference.
I do think the categorization possibilities of a forum is nice, as in
the ability to post longer discussions, pictures and other stuff that
the list can't really handle. But the problem with a forum is that you
have to keep checking different topics for updates rather that seeing
them pop up into your inbox.
One thing I want to try is subscribing to this list with gmail. Any mail
program can filter out list messages into a separate folder, but I think
gmail is capable of organizing the list messages by thread. So it has
some of the categorization functionality of a forum along with the
immediate updates of an email client.

I sent my message before it was mentioned about keeping the email list,
it just took a while to show up. But the fact of the matter is the list
will gravitate to one or the other. One will tend to have the activity
on it, the other will have a smattering of posts. So, one or the other
will tend to dominate.
Though I think it is a fine thing for Tom to offer alternatives, and if
the mass of folks move there to discuss coffee topics, so be it.
I use several forums, and have installed and administer one because they
are most useful for writing groups, critique groups, etc. So I use them.
And out of the one's I've used, phpBB is the one I like the best. I can
hit the show new post link and scan through the topics to see which ones
I want to read. But it still means I have to make an effort to log into
it, and it takes more time to check them. phpBB (at least last I
checked) doesn't automatically come with an RSS feed, but one can be
added. I did that to a forum I installed. But unfortunately the RSS feed
for it worked very sporadically. Perhaps Tom can find a better one or
they've improved it since then. But even with that, if I wanted to
respond I have to go log in, but it would make receiving them more
automatic.
But I don't have to do anything to read the list as it stands now other
than open my email program (Thunderbird). It automatically pulls them
in, sorts them into a folder designed for it, which is set up to show me
only new posts, threaded. I check the folder when I have the time and
scan through the topics, and read the ones I want. Don't have to log in
and hit links.
So for me, a forum offers more reduced value than it adds for this. So
naturally, that's my vote. That said, I understand others like them
better and it is certainly worth Tom offering that alternative and see
where the people gravitate toward. But I know for me that even if I
signed up for it, my tendency unless I have a driving reason to check
it, is to forget all about it and rarely check it out. That's just me.
I've been on another coffee related forum for a couple years now, and
I've thought to visit it about four times that I specifically recall.
But I've not had the time of late to do a lot of reading or responding,
so I certainly don't feel the list should worry about it on my account.
I simply voiced my opinion, such as it is. Tom's already invested time
in setting it up, so certainly give it a try and chance. People will
vote with where they hold their discussions.

I love the idea of looking for specific desired info on a forum. I also like the ease of receiving emails without having to put much effort into it. I for one, will be using both. Thanks Tom.
