Topic: OT: Pleasant couple hours roasting (6 msgs / 153 lines)

Spent a nice relaxing couple hours this afternoon roasting and bagging 48#
of greens. Can't say it enough, that little USRC 3k is one wonderful joy to
use work horse. Many batches I enjoy stepping outside to bask in the
drifting roast exhaust fragrance during 1st crack, god I do love it! The
last batch was first production batch of new Organic Sumatra Putra Rimbun
offering. Customers are gonna have fun with that ones name!

Mike,
You should consider moonlighting (because I know time is one thing
you've got on your hands...) for Dan at USRC. Your semi-regular posts
on the performance of your roaster are better than any advertising
campaign. Despite the roaster envy, keep going. Always a joy to read
the joys of everyone's bean-filled journey.

I'm with MiKe.
While I don't have a commercial roaster, I've been having a nice time with my GeneCafe roasting a few pounds to give
away next weekend at a family wedding.
The temperature in my little area of Orange County CA is 72 degrees and sunny. I'm enjoying a glass of
Bruchladdich(neat) and, because my better half is traveling, a good cigar outside while roasting.
Some days this is as good as it gets. It could only be better if I was on a beam reach halfway to Catalina Island.

Sounds nice. I'd join you on that trip to Catalina, but I'm at a
Japanese Anime convention in San Jose with the family.
I did get a small batch of Karote in this morning an a dry-burn
cleaning roast on the Behmor. It was desperation time, I'd been out
completely for a couple days and I really want to catch up and send
some out to friends and family. Work and family are pre-empting my
roasts, though.
I roasted in the back patio as a garage door spring broke making it
only open half-way. I didn't have any problems, I was afraid of low
voltage and tripped breakers but I unplugged the microwave to prevent
catastrophy. It was much nicer on the patio with the view, the dogs
for company, and more room. I even blew some chaff into the grass
while still in the drum.
No spirits or cigar, alas, and I'm starting to catch flack from the
wife about my coffee obsession. I asked her how her mom was doing on
decaf, and she very bluntly suggested I call her and ask her myself.
We'll be here all day, but I hope to get some more roasts in this lonf weekend.

In June, 1950, we could have gone from Long Beach to Avalon bay and back
using Beer Can Navigation. Just seaworthy w/o mast, we used the Gary marine
engine and bounced around like a thimble!
It would have been pointless to drink coffee on that ride, I think. I really
liked the Fresh Abalone at Avalon bay, and Orange groves all over the place
down from Cajon Pass on rte 66.

Mike,
I, too, never tire of the process of taking those beans from green to
roasted. Every step of the process from handling the beans and
smelling the fresh "green", sometimes grassy, sometimes spicy,
sometimes, herbal aroma to then smelling the changing fragrances of
warm sweet-clover hay, to florals, to fruits, to baking breads or
muffins, then to the 1st crack and on to new smells of of the coffee
as it develops.
Ah...
My batches are measured in ounces, not pounds like yours, but
nonetheless, I still revel in it.
OK...you've done it now -- I've got to go out and do another batch!
