Ok parts fail on other roasters too. I had to replace two parts in a HotTop.
One was the cooling fan. It hadn't totally died but I know the sound of
bearings going out in those little fans from years of computer field
service. The other part was the heating element which actually sort of
sagged/bent and began rubbing the drum. I'd bend it back, few roasts later
it'd be sagging on the drum again.
PS This was after roasting around 100 batches per week for 3 months
straight. Roasting back to back batches sometimes sessions lasting 12 hours
non-stop. Oh, and running over sized ~333gr batches pushing 10%over voltage
- 132v.
PSPS 18 months after stopping the torturous sessions HT still working fine.
(Torture ended after my custom built USRC 3k had finally arrived:-)
Back to the Behmor. Yeah I hear about failures now and then. However,
they've usually been when expected: when fairly new and getting burned in.
Don't recall hearing much about failures after a few dozen roasts done.
Personally I wouldn't be too worried about service in or out of warranty.
But then I'd have no qualms completely field sripping the sucker and putting
it back together. If you're any type of do it yourselfer parts would be
readily available and quite certain Joe or John could walk you through any
part replacement should you not want to ship it.
BTW, "lots of parts failing"? I don't think so in relation to units sold.
Even if 5% that went out had early death syndrome that would not be out of
manufacturing quality spec's for that price 1lb roasting unit. AND remember,
what's more important is how failures have been handled. Virtually nothing
but raves about the service.
If you want a 1LB capable roaster that does have a much higher build quality
be prepared to fork out many thousands for a USRC 0.5k...
