Love the concept. Just last week I considered sending an email to Ken
Davids to see if he would cup a couple of my roasts not so much to
judge the bean but to judge my and my roasters positives and
negatives.

I'm up for something like this. I live in a neighborhood with three home
brewers, one of which has recently won gold, silver and bronze medals in
regional competitions. He asked me just two days ago if there was this sort
of challenge for home roasters, and I had to reply no, there isn't.
I began giving thought to some sort of way to get something of the sort
started, and now, here it is.
Yes, I'd participate of there were something created. get my butt kicked,
maybe, but evaluation is evaluation.
Then, on to a national home roasting convention/meeting, I'd try to find a
way to participate in that as well. A sort of SCAA meeting for homeroasters
would be of huge interest to me.
Any others?

Hey John,
I'm with you. I'd do it just to get my butt kicked, and then to hang out
afterward and try to figure out what the folks who did the kicking were
doing to make theirs better.

Sounds like something that could be done in conjunction with another round
of cupping classes, like those offered last year at the swank headquarters
of SM ;-)
Let's leave the "competition" to the professionals and make it an
educational exercise, but we could still have some prizes for the
participants. I like prizes, and we could all pay a nominal entry fee to
cover the cost of said prizes, which could be raffled off at the end of the
day.
Cheers!

Agreed with the comments - I was thinking it would be feedback. I
mean, I am sure people wonder if they are getting the best potential
cup from any given coffee. If there is a bit of ashy roast taste, or
a lack of sweetness, it's hard to know until you put it up against
other coffees. So yeah, not a competition, although I think if there
are some stellar coffees they should receive special mention. Also,
if someone on a Behmor gets a really great roast, others will want to
know what the profile is, batch size, etc. I need to think about who
I could rope into judging, and timing. I have a trip to Ecuador and
Colombia soon. Maybe later July is better.
What is better: to have people submit their favorite coffee, OR to
distribute one type of coffee to everyone so the roast can truly be
judged as the sole variable, OR both of the above?
I am going to paste this as a topic in the forum so we can gather
reponses there too.

My buck ninety-eight cents worth (inflation:-) One coffee at a time,
multiple rounds with each round a different coffee. Some rounds all roasting
to specified target degree of roast, other rounds roaster's choice of best
roast degree for the bean. Much like a few of us did a number of years ago
exchanging roasts to compare different roasting methods.
OR could do two roasts submitted each round, one a specified degree of roast
(profile on how to achieve say for example a City+ their choice of course)
and the other roaster's choice "best" interpretation of the bean.

It would be ideal to have one type of coffee that everyone roasts and one
roasters choice for submission. Take your time Tom and lets set this thing
up allowing people enough time to schedule around the "event". Another round
of cupping classes part 2 would also be cool.
Cheers!

20) From: Mike Koenig
I also think this is a great idea.. I'd be in favor of incorporating a few
"well known" coffees (to keep the analogy to homebrewing going, this could
be something like the BJCP styles), so that many of us have the opportunity
to work with a bean we like, and are somewhat familiar with.
On the beer side of things, I've always been lucky enough to have a
certified BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) around at my "real job" to
critique my homebrew. Never had any interest in winning contests, but it's
great to have a well-trained palate around to identify what a certain flavor
defect might be, so I can try to eliminate it. I've often wished there were
something similar for homeroasting.

Unfortunately, when I reply on my smartphone (unlike this reply from my
computer) with the mobile Gmail app installed, I have no way of seeing or
deleting the previous messages in the thread; I am only presented with a
small box for entry of the reply message. Google Gmail is great for hiding
the quoted messages when you read them, but if you use the Gmail mobile app,
it sends them all. Google blindspot, assuming that everyone else is using
Gmail to read so they won't see the long thread or be annoyed by it.
Sorry about that, I'll see if there's a setting somewhere in Gmail, but I
doubt it.
