Topic: Green Coffee Extract (9 msgs / 206 lines)

So, I come to find out that green coffee bean extract is supposed to have
health and weight loss benefits.
Are we making a mistake in roasting these wonders? We should just make
coffee from the green beans instead.http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/12-13-2005-83817.asphttp://www.ecplaza.net/tradeleads/seller/5429039/green_coffee_bean_extract.html">http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2006/05/01/coffee_hea.html?category=health&guid060501093444http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/12-13-2005-83817.asphttp://www.ecplaza.net/tradeleads/seller/5429039/green_coffee_bean_extract.html
I just can't bring myself to try this. If someone else has the guts, let me
know how it tastes.

Thanks for the reports. Hell, I'll do it...but how? French press the ground
green beans? How do you grind the greens...no way Im gonna beat up my Rocky
with em. Perhaps I can use a lest costly hand grinder or whirly bird. Ill
let you know. It would definitely be a first for me...if it tasted
good...sure would save a hellava lotta time.

A friend of mine does that, and has for several years. However, I think he
simply soaks the entire green beans to make a "brew". He loves the taste,
and actually describes similar flavors to what I see described by people of
roasted coffee. His favorite was an IMV bean. I think he even tried some
beans from SM's after I referred him there based on my roasting coffee, and
thought Tom's IMV was the best he tried. It was funny to compare his flavor
comments to mine of my home roasted beans, and how much we both liked our
own.
FWIW.
I'll stick with my roasted beans ...

Don't grind your green beans in your grinders!!!!!
Don't ask me why, but I did this recently and it locked up like there were
stones in it. Took a return trip to the manufacturer to get it fixed.

from further googling, looks like they made an extract using 70%
ethanol under strict conditions ~ I think I'll stick to
roasting!

Doug,
Being in the open about doing things that others should avoid is
sometimes painful but notes like this are some of the most valuable
contributions to the list. I really appreciate your openness. You
have prevented many repeats of this mistake. Thanks.

you could combine the heart healthy components of alcohol (say vodka) with
the health components of green coffee in an infusion. bet that would taste
weird.

Based on the prior email I decided to give some green coffee a shot. Took
three blue scaa scoops of ethiopian dry process org limu green beans (its a
waste...I know) and put them in a hand grinder. Too hard, thought I'd break
the grinder. Tried a strong blender-worked well except very uneven grind
(big pieces of bean and small pieces).
I put the green devil mix into a french press and boiled up 3/4 cup water
for each scoop (same as I do for roasted). Poured the water on right after
the kettle whistled...I didn't wait 15 second as usual. I let steep for 4
minutes.
Added splenda and tried it. It actually tasted like the greens smelled. My
wife, a tea drinker, liked it and said it was like a nice cup of herbal tea.
I thought it was vaguely reminiscent of the qishr tea.
Unfortunately, I don't care how good it is for you. Green coffee is no
replacement for a good roast. Actually I'd rather have a brutally strong cup
of green tea (at the equivalent of coffee strength-4 bags or so).
Just thought I'd pass on the experience. Thanks for giving the idea for a
new experiment-kinda spiced up my afternoon.
Also, so sad to see confirmation of data regarding the diterpines being
potentially harmful, which I have known. Sad that they are removed, with the
taste, from a paper filter. I have no intention of using paper. If I cared
about my health, I should quit smoking first, lose weight, and then we can
talk about paper.
Dean.
