Topic: Autopsy of Hottop (2 msgs / 49 lines)

With the rear mounted exhaust fan pulling a vacuum on all of the interior of
the Hottop chaff can enter at any location that is an air pathway connection
to the intake to the fan. The bean discharge chute has a small( about.040"
gap right where the beans go into the cooling tray significant amounts of
chaff are sucked into the interior of the machine at this point during the
dumping of hot roasted beans. It can be closed up with some high temperature
food-grade silicon caulk but there is a risk of melting the adjacent plastic
housing around the chute. I have not encountered that problem as a result of
closing up this 3 sided gap. Next the shaft clearance between the drum shaft
and the internal end wall leaks the most chaff while the roast is under way.
It must be cleaned by removing the fan housing regularly (every ten roasts)
if you are roasting very high chaff producing coffee. Note I have added ss
flat washers under the heads of the sheet metal screws connecting the
plastic fan housing to prevent the harder ss screws from chewing up the
mating housing seat for these screws. I have also used longer screws to make
starting and fitting the housing back into place with an electric screw
driver. The chaff from the ill defined internal air flow path along with
the other air pathways 9vent holes in the ss external housing and those in
the bottom of the electrical /electronic housing allow chaff from all these
sources to slow down and settle out on the circuit boards. In the colder
months the chaff along with condensation is problematic, and I have lost a
main board and a control panel to these problems. The best solution is to
regularly open and clean these areas religiously. None of the wiring in
these areas is protected from smoldering or open flames. Altering the
internal air flow can provide significant improvements to these problems as
well as roaster performance!
