Topic: A Kansas surprise (5 msgs / 102 lines)
1) From: Michael Irrera
So, I've been working in Topeka, KS for the last week or so, and
hadn't even considered that I'd be able to find a decent shop here,
considering how hard it is at home in Boston (apart from my kitchen,
of course).
Imagine my surprise when I took a coworker's advice and went about 5
minutes down the road to PT's Coffee.
2009 Roast Magazine large roaster of the year? In a strip mall in
Topeka?
This morning I had a shot of their espresso blend that was
ridiculously good. I will be back at least once a day for the
remainder of my time here.
All of a sudden KS doesn't seem that bad anymore, though all that sky
still triggers the agoraphobia.

This, from a co-worker in Kansas.....when I shared this location....
Coastal snob!
For his other basics while out in the provinces:http://www.localburger.com/http://www.lawrence.com/places/zs_divine_espresso/">http://www.wheatfieldsbakery.com/http://freestatebrewing.com/http://www.localburger.com/http://www.lawrence.com/places/zs_divine_espresso/
May be of some help...

Yes, I'm a coastal snob perhaps, but I've been to Free State a couple
of times already, tried to go to Wheatfields (doesn't open early
enough), and had an awesome dinner at Pachamama's last night. Lawrence
(where KU is located) is very different from Topeka, though.
And I think they're territories, not provinces.

I thought the only people who voluntarily lived in Topeka were in the
Federal Witness Protection Program. Who knew they could roast coffee, too?

I was also impressed by Uncle Jack's in Independence, KS (great wine-
by-the-glass list, including suggested menu pairings; microbrews; and
a bistro menu the equal of anything in my up-and-coming Edgewater
neighborhood in Chicago, but 20% cheaper with ample free street
parking). And in tiny Dearing (NW of Coffeyville, SE of Independence),
King's Coffee has very good espresso & espresso drinks (and
knowledgeable baristi) and pies and quiches to die for (sandwiches and
pastries not too shabby either).
