Topic: Coffee in NYC? (12 msgs / 257 lines)
1) From: Phil Palmintere
In about a week's time, we take our daughter off to college in NYC in
Morningside Heights.
Do any of you have suggestions on locations to get good espresso or other
good coffee?
Many thanks

There are a few
9th street espresso
Cafe Grumpys
And Joes.
Those are the known cafes.
Also try espressomap.com
Congrats on your daughter going to columbia (I guess). Great school.

Phil,
I recently saw some info regarding a shop in NYC pulling shots from
Hairbender (a well thought of blend from Stumptown in Portland Or.).
If they are buying their beans from across the continent I would
expect they must be fairly serious. A casual google shows Ninth
Street Espresso Location: 341 East 10th Street (between A & B), New
York, NY. You may want to confirm that before planning on it.

There are quite a few now, actually. I did a cafe crawl through
Manhattan a couple days after Christmas last year...first time in NYC,
took my best friend and his pregnant wife with me since I was staying
with them in PA for Christmas...we had an absolute blast. Gimme
Coffee! is also known (I believe they switched from air roasting to
drum roasting earlier this year), but there are a handful of other
coffee houses popping up here and there. Try Man Seeking Coffee for
reviews if you want a fuller look at what's available:http://manseekingcoffee.wordpress.com/?s=new+yorkIf you have the time to visit a handful of these shops, I think you'll
be in for a treat.

A new Jittery Joes just opened up at 216 East 45th Street. They roast here
in Athens but I know the coffee was shipped to them a couple days ago.

Stumptown to supply their coffee. Instead, they're using
Intelligentsia, with their espresso being the Alphabet City Blend.
Haven't tasted it, but I would wager that it's worth a trip to one of
their locations. Let us know what you think if you do go :)

I would be suspicious of -- not favorably impressed by -- a NYC cafe th=
at brought beans all the way across the continent. To me it says they are m=
ore concerned with reputation than freshness. Their coffee would likely be =
either stale or overly expensive, or both. =

Ninth Street's coffee was not overly expensive or stale when I was
there. Bags of whole bean were labeled with roasted dates within
three to four days of my visit, and the ristretto I had was absolutely
delicious. Another friend, a good barista who moonlights at Big Bear
in the D.C. area, was glowing with happiness when he told me about his
experience there.
Now, though, since they're serving coffee from Intelligentsia, the
distance is lessened. I'd still visit in a heartbeat.

IIRC Stumptown now has roasting operations not only in Portland, OR but also
Seattle, WA and NY, NY. And their bean bags can also be found littering some
grocery store shelves like everybody and their big brother. IMO they and
they're rep' ain't what it once was... =

miKe,
Ya gotta be kiddin'!! Grocery stores?
It's been several years since I've bought any of his roast. But then
the need will probably not arise again anyway.
