Topic: More Alp time/temp data (73 lines)
1) From: Jay Kurtz
Hi again. I've done three more roasts with the newly moded Alp, and
kept timings on the first two. Unfortunately, I was distracted talking
with a friend during the third one and forgot to do the time/temp
recording... and that's the only one I've used the Dilithium Crystals on
(e.g. turned the switch to "manual override" for a couple of minutes
near the end).
So, both of the following were again totally controlled by the Alp's
"brain".
Sum CO2 Decafe 8oz
min temp
 0 65
 1 75
 2 110
 3 145
 4 185
 5 220
 6 250
 7 275
 8 300
 9 320
10 335
11 350
12 360
13 370
14 380
15 390 "true" first crack
16 405 second crack
17 420 hit "cool" button
Ethiopian Harar "Horse", Grade 5 8 oz
min temp
 0 75
 1 90
 2 125
 3 160
 4 195
 5 225
 6 255
 7 275
 8 395
 9 315
10 325
11 335
12 350
13 365
14 370
15 385 "true" first crack
16 395
17 405 second crack, hit "cool" button at end of minute. temp
was probably higher at the end, forgot to record
Observations: the greener non-decafe Harar "stuggled" to get to second
crack more than the darker-complexion decafe. The second roast start out
10 degrees warmer because the unit was already warmed up... the coffee
beans were stored together, so the actual bean temp would have been the
same.
The third roast, that I brain-dead forgot to record (this was while my
friend was telling me that people loose 0.5% of their brain power every
year after age 24... I'm 44) was Zambian AA Lilyvale. That's a very
green, very "fresh" bean with a light complexion. I turned the moded Alp
to "manual heater on" for about 2 minutes at about the 15 minute point
of the roast, when the temp appear to be "stuck" at about 375. I turned
it back to "auto" (e.g. Alp control) after the temp hit 400 or so.
Sorry I didn't record the third roast.
Jay
