When a friend of mine was stationed on an aircraft carrier, the Chief who ran the electronics shop, had a room where put broken equipment. It had a big sign that said NFG. A Lt. tried to give him a hard time about the use of bad language and with a perfectly straight face, the Chief said that he did not know what the Lt. thought it meant, but NFG stood for "Non-Functional Gear."
