Fire in my Behmor:
Help please. I was roasting one pound Ethopian Organic Dry Roasted Birbissa on B, P2 and the Behmor caught fire after about 13 minutes. Can anyone tell me what caused this and what I need to do to fix the situation? I keep my roaster clean between uses and I am concerned as to why this would occur. Any help you can give would be appreciated. I enjoy this site and after a while have begun to feel as if I know many of you. Indeed, it is a good listserve.
Many thanks.

Dry processed coffees have a lot of chaff, and it easily catches fire.
Try roasting smaller batches of these coffees to help avoid that.

Adrienne,
This thread on CoffeeGeek has some good advice besides the advice in the
Behmor manual regarding fires:http://coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/homeroast/412366I've had a few cases of chaff ignition, but nothing serious so far. As for
cleanup, simple green and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser or a microfiber cloth
work wonders.

When my husband roasts African beans he sometimes has that problem. when he puts the beans in the drum he has to shake it out really well to get rid of the small beans that fall through the mesh, even in the smaller mesh drum. even then there is always more chaff with the African beans.

On DP coffees cut back on weight to 13-14oz I also use the small grid
basket. I roasted 20lbs of IMV at Christmas and was having the same problem.
Chaff fires are not fun this will help Ray

Adrienne,
Was it a chaff fire or a bean fire? I'll admit that I've set a half pound
or two of beans on fire before. Got distracted, probably by something
shiny, and let the roast go. Nothing can prevent that except *actually
paying* *attention* to the roast. I know, Roasting 101, right? Well,
sometimes I need to be reminded of even the simplest of things.
If it was a chaff fire - cut back on the the batch size when roasting a
chaffy dry-processed bean, or, don't go as dark with the pound.
Best,
Kris McN
