Topic: Coffee with no Crack (7 msgs / 124 lines)
1) From: decesarecj
This might be a stupid question, but I purchased some coffee on E bay last week.( I always buy from Sweet Maria's) Anyway, checked the buyers past background, and all seemed to be good.
The coffee arrived, looked nice and clean and fresh. Roasted my 1st batch, and their was very little crack sounds on 1st and 2ND. Cupped great, with little sound, Why? Shame on me, I know! Sorry for cheating!

It probably was older coffee. Older beans crack with less force than
fresher coffee. Also different varietals crack differently.

Also: not every bean cracks as audibly as every other. When I first started roasting (with an iRoar), I was roasting a Brazilian, and I could not hear the cracks to save my life. I was basing everything off of color and aroma. Then I got in a Yirgacheffe, and that thing sounded like firecrackers going off (though 2nd was still pretty much impossible to hear . . . )

In an iRoast2, there is not a lot of difference in the sound the beans make
in second and the sound they make being flung against the the side of the
pot....just a lil bit of change in the type of sound ...it seems to develop
a quality similar to paper being crinkled. Also, you will find a sweet spot
where the cracks will be much more audible. When your ear is in that spot
even moving closer will cause it ti vanish back into the rest of the noise.

I've had a few beans that gave almost no 1st crack and they were all
from Sweet Maria's. The small amounts I've bought from the local
roaster I used before I started home roasting always have a distinct 1st
& 2nd crack.
So, I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with where you got
the beans or whether they are fresh.
Tom has discussed variations in beans' cracking behavior on this list in
the past and perhaps also in the notes on certain beans.

One of my roasts of a 2009 Tanzania Peaberry - Songe (Behmor 1# P3 C, a
gradual roast profile) I notied that the cracks were quiet and hard to
detect.
Don't know if it was the beans or the profile, really tasty bean with a very
long aftertaste.

That Guatemala Oriente that everyone is still ranting and raving about (making me jealous!) if i remember correctly had an elusive 1st crack for me. So did a Yemen Mokha i recently played with.
