Topic: Just to change the subject (7 msgs / 184 lines)
1) From: Mike Chester
With the current dispute going on - I would not call it a flame war as
everyone has been too polite - maybe a shouldering ember war, I thought that
people might like a change of pace. I received this question off-list, but
I thought that I would forward the answer to the list just to change the
subject. If it seems to be a bit of a brag on my part, I am sorry.

Mike C ,
I'd call it an over caffeinated opinion fest. ;-)
Better watch out though, your topic wasn't about home roasting, it's about
espresso equipment and consumption. :-D
BTW, I did roast five different batches yesterday afternoon in my Behmor,
ahead of some big rains heading our way.
The IMV already smells divine, fruit bomb madness.
Cheers!

I went over to a friends house today who had installed a Wadlow PID on his
Gaggia Carreza. I brought along my new toy, the La Peppina spring assisted
open boiler lever and another friend with a La Pavoni lever joined us to
make and talk coffee.
I'm not sure that much was accomplished, but it was nice to get together and
pull shots and talk about coffee. My friend had invited three others over
who were non-geeks, so most of the time was just pulling shots for
consumption instead of a full-on geek fest.
The PID has made a tremendous improvement in his shots with temperature
consistency. We talked about grinding, dosing, distribution, and tamping
and then after we got our caffiene on, went downstairs to look at a surplus
PID he has to see if the La Peppina would benefit. A project for another
day.
The La Pavoni leverhead left with one of my popcorn poppers and 10 oz of
greens, I have high hopes that he'll get the bug in the new year.
It was really odd pulling shots in someone else's kitchen. Everything was
out of place and I had to think about the whole process instead of my normal
muscle memory and coffee prep rhythm.
Maybe when I get to my 2010 New Year's Resolution to clean out the garage
I'll have some homeroasters over to roast coffee or pull shots or just talk
about coffee. There's so much that you miss from trying to pick this up
from the computer screen that a face to face really turbocharges the
knowledge.

I'm hoping to make it to one of these in the future.
I heard back from my Gaggia Carreza friend that after he zeroed his MDF this
morning, he's been able to pull much better espresso shots. I think his
grinder setting was holding him back and now with that set and the PID, he's
making much better espresso.
I was happy to see that the comparison of the grinds from my hand grinder to
his pre-zeroed MDF gave the hand grinder the nod.
