Topic: Behmor Roasting Ethiopian Coffees (5 msgs / 180 lines)
1) From: Robert Yoder
Greetings, Great Group,
A friend will be visiting soon and wants to try my Behmor Roaster. He is fond of Ethiopian Coffees (don't know which) and will bring some along.
Can anyone recommend a Behmor Profile for this one? (I'd like to do the best I can.)
Thanks in advance for any help, and,
Happy Roasting,
robert yoder

I had fantastic results with the Sidamo by roasting 8 ounces of greens on P2
A 1 (1 being the 1 pound setting), and dropping the time to 14:00. I
manually hit "cool" at 12:05 at the end of 1st crack.
I have also had good results with the Moplaco Yirga Cheffe by roasting 8
ounces of greens on P4 A 1, and dropping the initial time to 12:00, and then
adding 4:00 back during the roast. I manually hit "cool" near the end of
the profile as 1st crack was ending.
I found the flavors really came forward after 3 days of rest.

I use P/3 for all my Ethiopian coffees. My profile the IMV for 12.
oz 1lb/P3/---to 14:00/Start/max time.
FC was around 7:00 min left EOR 3:25 no 2nd cr C+ Well that's what
my notes say anyway :-)
P3 gives a good 2-3 min roast time to 2nd every time for me sometimes

And just to further confuse you, I tend to roast Ethiopian coffees as
follows:
P5 - Progam A
1 lb setting
8 oz greens
Hit "-" to bring time down to 2:00.
Hit "Start"
Hit "+" to bring it back up to 20:00
Listen for 1st crack and hit "stop" 30-60 seconds after 1st crack starts for
C+ to FC.
I like P5 with the Ethiopians, as it gives me a distict break between 1st
crack and 2nd crack.

I wish my post and your answer had appeared on the list earlier (sent it Fr=

We roasted 8 oz of the Sidamo at 1/2 P2 B (13 min) and ran out of time, so =
added some time. In our roast, it was difficult to distinguish first from =
second, and some extra-small beans escaped the drum and caught fire upon op=
ening the door at Cool. Closing the door solved the problem, and the roast=
looks OK to me (as a total naif wrt Ethiopian, and near total naif wrt Sec=
ond Crack (my friend likes darker roasts and has been using an IR2 in back-=
to-back roasts). =

I had quite a time cleaning off the burned-on oils from the Behmor! As lis=
t members reported, Simple Green seemed pretty effective, and I have found =
the hand-wipes offered on entering Grocery Stores and the like to be pretty=
 effective as well.

We'll see in a few days!
Thanks again for responding to my plea!
