Topic: OT: Road trip coffee suggestions (8 msgs / 179 lines)
1) From: Jeff Kilpatrick
Hello,
After two and a half years in the pit of Houston, I'm Seattle-bound to
finish up grad school and marry my love. While I'm not able to take a route
through California to visit SM or the other great Bay-area coffee
attractions, I'd still like to visit some great cafes and roasters off the
beaten path. The major (and major-ish) cities I'll be passing through are
   - Houston (anything besides Catalina?)
   - Dallas
   - Oklahoma City (other than the super awesome Coffee Slingers?)
   - Wichita
   - Denver
   - Cheyenne
   - north/northwest of Salt Lake City
   - Boise
   - Portland
   - Seattle
Any suggestions? Shops near the interstate with nearby parking for a moving
truck get bonus points (though I'm adventurous and willing to brave the
streets with the truck or on bike if it's *that* good). I'll be a couple
days too early to hit MiKe's new shop grand opening (though I'll definitely
be there if my car seems to be in good enough shape).
Thanks,
-jeff

Jeff,
While the official Grand Opening Party is NY Day, feel free to stop by
anyway! Just give me a call 360-989-6658 a bit in advance so I'll be here
and not out and about getting stuff or at downtown Paradise Cafe. (Not there
but here 'cuz I'm here taking a break from wearing electrician's hat;-)
Now back to work...

While going through Oklahoma, give the guys at USRC and ask if you can get a brief tour. Wouldn't hurt to ask. It's not a cafe, but the build roasters...good ones too as i understand it. Any my brother lives in Denver so i'll ask him.

Thanks miKe! I'll give you a call before I head through. It'll probably be
December 28th.
Good call Michael.

Heard back from my brother regarding Denver. He's a homeroaster as well:
"Dang, I don't really know much about the local roasting scene. As far
as cafes go I have to recommend Red Trolley in the Highlands.
Only been there a couple times but Ned the barista is an artist."
So there's that for ya!

Hammer Down for Seattle town, especially if you're on I-25 through Denver.
Check your fuel load at Colo. Springs, U-Hauls are gas hogs. Map Quest the
trip distance- maybe you can avoid having to stop in Denver. I'm not
current, but there was a capable barista in a Billings, MT shop, and Red
Lodge has an interesting roaster/ shop.
My commodious Capresso new/refurb is no slouch, we're just N. suburb of
Denver in the Land of 201 F boiling water...
We like straight shots but I can do a Cacao latte and a honey latte, sans
art. The artist resides in Burbank and latte art looks like child's
scribbling. Gotta teach Edith espresso, right after I learn it.

I have been at it for over a year now and I'm still just getting the steam
down pat. Art? My hearts are looking nice. Flowers? Forgetaboutit.
I need a class or two from ABC in Pdx. If you can't do the art with the
pitcher don't bother with the cute chocolate sketches, it only shows me how
much you don't know about pitcher work. After all, the more stuff you layer
on top the less your going to taste the spro which is my focus.
Hows that for sounding a bit over the snob cliff of coffee.

I only care what it tastes like, how it feels going down and whether it warms me up. I am impressed by a complex rosetta, but I'll take a better-tasting heart/blob/flat white any time.
