Sunday my Cory rod went down the garbage disposal. I always knew it was a
possibility. I guess it was just a matter of time. I had the foresight to
have 2 backups. However, it was not a pretty sight, I remember years ago
going to The Automat in NY. Putting a nickle in the coffee machine and then
forgetting to put a cup under the spout.Standing there feeling like an idiot
as my coffee streamed down the drain. I had the same feeling as I heard my
beloved Cory rod being mashed by the garbage disposal. Still haven't gotten
over it but this helps.

Sounds like it's not been a great week for Vac Pots.
I decided to order a backup Cory rod a few weeks ago and have it stashed
away. I was seriously considering Vac Pot this morning for the Ethiopian I
roasted, maybe it's good I passed.

Hi Barry,
My condolences on your loss!
I cringe just hearing the crunching sound of Cory glass in a sink
disposal in my mind's ear. I've thought about that possibility a hundred
times myself, certain that I'd fall victim sooner or later.
It's a good thing you have spares.
I'm safe for the moment, as they have no in-sink garbage disposals in any of
the places where I'm staying here in NZ.
Just before leaving, I placed an order for two spare Cory rods, on the
assumption that I'd eventually break my primary. They're tough, but not
indestructible.
Just got word that our container is arriving this week. So I'll be brewing
my first NZ vacpot brew from coffee I've ground myself sometime around New
Year's Day. Getting tired of press pots from pre-ground coffee.
Can't wait!

Which sort of thing is why I dug my heels in and refused to
allow a garbage disposal in our newly remodeled kitchen!
My wife thought I was being an idiot. I'll have to
show this to her.
(I have to admit that I was thinking more in terms of
fingers rather than Cory rods, but the principle is
the same!)

Um, there's more... Saturday morning I was doing dishes and set the funnel
for my 3 cup Yama Table Top on the counter to dry. Yep, I knocked it off. I
yelped as my elbow hit it and before it hit the floor, as I knew what was
about to happen.
My son added a replacement to his list to Santa for me, so I had to order it
right away in order to ensure it's under the tree come Friday morning.
$25.00 for 2 day shipping to be sure it is, in fact under the tree...
Vac pot gremlins, indeed!

The pictured glass rod is a Cona rod, not a Cory. They are pretty similar,
though.
Ryan, the rod acts as the filter for the coffee in vacuum pots. Here's the
full page about vac pots at Sweet Maria's.http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.brewers.vacuum.phpNow which brewer will you buy? Vac pot coffee is pretty yummy stuff!

Yes, despite stories of implosions, volcanic superheated water expulsions,
stuck pots, etc., it makes great coffee.

I have wanted to try a vac pot for some time. When I bought my French press i lost interest in drip coffee altogether- between my (deceased) French press and my Rancilio Silvia, my drip coffee maker has quite a layer of dust built up on it. Unfortunately I killed my French press beaker when washing dishes and need to replace it. Maybe I will try a vac pot instead and replace the beaker later. Then again, espresso never hurt anyone right?
I could not imagine life without coffee...
