Topic: Behmor times with new chaff collector vs old (7 msgs / 93 lines)
1) From: Dave Ehrenkranz
I recently got the new low profile chaff collector and have noticed my roasting times have increased subsstantially. For instance 227 grams of Ethiopia Gr.3 Dry Process Yirga Cheffe roasting times:
With old high profile collector 16min 9 secs beans lost 18.9% of wt and went into 2nd crack (FC+)
With new low profile collector 18min 0 secs beans lost 16.3% of wt and estimate roast was a City+. Definitely lighter in color as well. I also preheated the roaster with chaff collector in roaster for approx 55 seconds.
I also note that the new low profile collector weighs 590 grams vs 424 grams.
Have others been noticing similar results?

No, but I was suspecting that roasting w/o chaff filter was extending my
roast times. My suspicion is that the old chaff collector reflects more heat
than just the door & floor w/o iy.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

You are correct. Bright shiny chaff collector is a critical part of
temperature control and heat energy containment.

Rich, have you noticed increased roasting time with low profile chaff collector?

Opening up the glass area allows the loss of considerable heat energy
If you do not compensate for this loss you will see an increase in
roasting time. You can conduct an experiment by roasting a batch with
the chaff collector and a batch without.

The question then becomes does the increased time effect the roast favorably or not. And is the low profile chaff collector better than the original collector?

Depends on what profile you are trying for. The increased mass and
leakage will increase the time required to reach 480 degrees chamber
temperature. If you use P-1 it will probably not be significant taste wise.
