It never ends. Our almost 27 year old lost his job in October and has been
living in our basement since then. He is making plans for the use of the
back yard this summer. Scary.

Well, I really hope that Rayleigh chooses to go to college. When Kaylene first found out she was pregnant I sat down and computed the nessasary monthly deposit and interest rate to save up $40,000 for a college fund for her- I have put the initial deposit into some low to moderate risk Exchange Trade Funds- Rayleigh is less than a day old and she already has a stock portfolio!
"He is making plans for the use of the back yard this summer."
Uh oh, dare I ask? I could think of many uses for a backyard during the summer- not all of them are Sunday school approved.

Hahaha - sorry for laughing. I'm truly sending my condolences, Mike. I still
have one of my four kids living w/me - one of my two sons. However, he is
contributing to the rent (which I desperately need at this point) and is a
straight A student, w/plans to go to med school - so I don't mind this
temporary situation. Since he's dyslexic, and only learned how to read at 15
(correction - taught himself how to read!), I'm extremely proud of him. He
only became this determined after becoming a father, lol.
My other son, however... he just got his own apt when I moved in June. He
had no choice (so that's my advice - move to a one bedroom apt or condo,
hahaha). The one living w/me is almost 28, and the other is 26.
Sorry for the OT conversation - on the plus side, I've converted the one
living w/me into a real homeroast addict. He's brought my coffee into his
work study, and shared it w/one of his instructors.
Drinking a cup of Honduras Organic-Daniel Ordonex III Microlot. Bought five
lbs, and was thinking that these were the first greens from SM that both my
kid & I just didn't like.
But I now know it was my brewing method. More on that w/a Tradition I'm
going to post today...

Gordy, now 25, avoided the emotional trauma or embarrassment of having to move back in with us by choosing to attend college a half-hr. subway ride away; his postgrad training classes are all at Chicago theater companies and he is looking at Northwestern (a 15-minute train ride in the opposite direction) for its Masters program in comedy and theatrical writing. And he had the good taste to choose a college with tuition lower than that of his high school!
And you know what? Even though I left the nest (and flew 3000 miles away) to marry at 20, I'm not emotionally ready to let him go yet!

Oh, Sandy - I know what you mean. With me, it's mostly because, hey, I'll be
alone (haven't met anyone yet), though. Don't mind it *that* much, but it *will
*be a change.
One of my daughters told me (when both boys were still living w/me) that
they never expected me to end up as a typical Italian mom (w/my adult sons
still living at home), esp. when I am so not-typically-Italian.
Funny thing - my other 'grandson' - my other son's girlfriend's little boy
(both whom also lived w/me for awhile) started to call me 'Bubbie' - I kept
it since it felt right.
Will not tell anyone that it stemmed from me telling him that I had big
feet, when he tried to put my shoes on - and my son pointing to me, saying
"She's 'Big Feet'.... was his toddler-speak...sigh, I'm happy being *Bubbie*,
but not *Big Feet!*

Oh, yes - I know this. My little Dylan chose my name for me. It was vaguely

So, Bubbie, I am!
getting back on topic ... I'm making my own little coffee convert already.
My nearly 1 and a half year old grandson is fascinated with my coffee
grinder. He has to come running in the kitchen everytime he hears me use it
- I ask him (everytime) if he wants to smell the coffee. Last time he got
confused and blew out instead of breathing in - ha - so cute!
My son says the coffee-love is in his genes...

I have a granddaughter with the same name. While not a consumer she has

23) From: Lynne
(Ha - Ryan, if you have the time to read this thread, I bet you didn't think
that your little Raisinette [I love that!] would ignite this conversation -
hopefully no one is offended at our conversation going off topic.)
I am now a typical, shameless grandmother/bubbie, who is crazy about kids.
Thought those days were past - then bam! my little Kiernan was born, and now
I love seeing or hearing about *any* kids.
Sandy - 'cappootzeeno,' huh? Shows you were training your son right! You
reminded me I need a trip in town (I'm north of beantown & don't get in too
often because public transportation from my new home is sparse). I love to
haggle at the open market right next door to Faneuil Hall - Haymarket. I
have lots of good memories of going there w/my mom. Many a time I've managed
to get a whole case of fruit (jam, jam, jam!! mmm) for one or two dollars..
in the summer, of course, when it would go bad if they didn't sell it. These
are old timers, and you have to be careful you don't get stuck with bad
produce - but, for me, it is *so* worth the work!
Oh - it was nearby in the North End where I went into my favorite shop -
it's like an old fashioned shop, and they sell a variety of spices and other
odd food related stuff. I noticed a couple of barrels of coffee greens,
labeled with just the country of origin. When I asked if they knew how old
the beans were, the guy just shrugged his shoulders and told me that it
didn't matter, because, "they never go stale."
Ewww!! I tried to explain otherwise to him, but I knew it was a lost
cause...
Ray - that is TOO CUTE! You need to capture that "Oh, man," on video for
those of us who feel the same (everyone on this list!)
Tom - I like to think we are passing down a tradition that will be carried
on for a long time. Hey, maybe I'll even get a grandchild who will actually
like to cook and/or bake (most of my kids think that 30 seconds in the micro
is cooking, sad to say).
Hey - I'm sure little Ben will carry on the same tradition, too!

About 18 1/2 years ago, my daughter was born. As luck would have it, that
month's issue of Consumer Reports had an article titled "saving for college"
and it had a table saying "if your kid is born today, here's how much you
have to save each month" for various scenarios of public vs. private
college, grad school, etc.
Back then, the number was $600/mo for private college & professional school.
