Topic: Coffee from Malawi? (4 msgs / 77 lines)
1) From: Howard Degenholtz
So over a cup of Colombia "Platos Fuertes de Huila" this weekend, a friend
and erstwhile roaster asked me about availability of coffee from Malawi. He
had been to Africa recently and brought back coffee from the Mzuzu region
and enjoyed it immensely. Has anyone on the list had experience with that
region?

A lot of trouble transporting coffee from Malawi promptly, so it does
not get exposed to high humidity at port and en route. There is
potential, actually a lot of Gesha coffee there (but it does not cup
like Esmeralda Gesha )- also a lot of catimor cultivar which is not
good. We had someone offering us Gesha-Catimor blend!

I have had some wonderful coffee from there, but none recently ---I had
heard the political situation at present was interfering with getting it out
in timely fashion.
It was a Malawi mapanga, I seem to recall... I'd have to check my bucket
labels....

Thanks for the replies. I will pass along to my friend. I know a couple
people that go back and forth to Malawi regularly. I think I'll check into
it, but keep expectations low. My sense was that the government is stable,
but that does not say anything about exports!
Cheers,
