Topic: Second brewer throwdown (9 msgs / 213 lines)
1) From: John A C Despres
Just over a year ago, several SM listers held the first Great Can-Am Brewer
Throwdown and it seems time to do it again.
Here's how it works - Go through the cupboard and choose as many brewers as
you'd like to compare. Roast enough of the same coffee to brew in each of
them to compare the brewers fairly.
Date for comparison Feb 27.
My plan will be to invite a couple friend and sample smal amounts of coffee
from the following brewers"
Clever Coffee Dripper
Yama vac pot with Cory rod filter
Technivorm
Chemex
French press
AeroPress
I'll adjust the grind per brewer and sample away with tasting notes then
post my results.
I'll run this on the Homeroasters page as well as the SM forum as well.

Some questions regarding the Second brewer throwdown:
Are Moka Pots allowed?
Is either a plain old Melitta filter pour over drip or auto drip allowed?
Can one do the tasting one day later...I would have a lot easier time
rounding up people for a coffee tasting on Sunday afternoon then Saturday?
Being a die hard moka pot fan, I don't have most of the other brewing
equipment listed :( I think I have a French Press buried somewhere in my
pantry closet...but not sure I remember how to use it (eegads - I need to
broaden my horizons a little).
No hard feelings if none of these things are permissible :) It will be as
much fun to 'watch from the sidelines' as to participate!
Thanks
Mary

Of course, Turkish in your ibrik is allowed. Any set of brewers you like -
whatever you have at home.

I'd like to come out of lurk mode and participate, if I can. Is every one using the same coffee? I will be out of town on the 27th and so would have to do a late entry.
I have:
Cory vac pot
French press
Aeropress with paper filter
Aeropress with gold filter
CCD with paper filter and with gold filter
Ibrik
Standard porcelain pourover
Ibrik
Espresso

I think we should each choose our own coffee and make each throwdown a
little different.

Hi, Mary.
You may use any, all or just a couple brewers you choose. There are no rules
in that area; it's all for fun, so if you have two to use, that's more than
fair.
Certainly you can wait until the next day.

John - Thanks for the clarification on the brewing throwdown rules.
Count me in. Barring any major snowstorms, I should have 3-4 people tasting
along with me. Now if I can only dig up my French press....it seems to have
disappeared. In the meantime, Moka pot versus auto drip with paper filter
(a Gavalia Coffee machine-a present from my sister..haven't the heart to
get rid of it for that reason..).
Anyone want to share ideas on what they are going to be roasting for the
throwdown? I know we each get to choose the coffee...but I would not be
adverse to roasting the same bean as some one else..and comparing the
results with different brewing methods.
