Topic: When your do NOT have home roasted coffee... a (14 msgs / 476 lines)
1) From: Edward Bourgeois
I don't get to travel like I used to. In my early days I'd find myself
drinking cowboy coffee in a gypsy wagon at 10,000ft waiting to select
livestock on horseback. Now I work mostly out of my office at home
where the homeroast is always available. Though I often go to meetings
elsewhere and always bring a thermos. Otherwise, when I'd take a sip
of meeting coffee someone would tend to look at me and say "are you
alright? is there something wrong?"

Yep, I agree. I have to say having my Aeropress & CCD & Hario Skerton, and
now the SM's tea kettle (Ibis mini?), I'm happy with my travels when there
is no good coffee. For my flying travels, I have to agree that the
Aeropress & Skerton work well enough to deliver nice fresh coffee.
Depending on the locale, I take either beans and grinder, or ground. Also,
I just got back from Utah on a ski trip with the family, and I brought my
tea pot, CCD, and grinder. Our family friends were just laughing, until I
made them a cup of 3 day old Ethiopian. They finally could drink black
coffee and were loving it. It's a little more work, but it's worth it.
Some other updates from past posts, just to complete the saga(s), for those
who want to read. :-)
I went to the coffee shop that was mentioned this morning for my atonement.
Unfortunately, I stand by what I said (maybe I'll find a good shop some
day). Espresso was watery and over extracted, cappucino was almost like my
other experience. So home roast, despite it's variability and
uncertainties, brings so much more with its freshness compared to shops in
my locale. If I had Barefoot or Red Berry or Blue Bottle near by, it would
be tougher. But, the baked goods and drip are still good. Just one man's
opinion.
A Las Vegas update, from my trip through Vegas to Utah: the family of 5
stayed at Embassy Suites Convention Center OFF the Strip. I loved it! It
had a nice room, and a little kitchenette for making coffee, whereas my
Strip hotels had nothing. I broke out the CCD and kettle, and fresh coffee
and was simply delighted. So at least there's hope for some less known
hotels.
England update: I'm staying in Southampton. I'm going to check out the
link to see if I can find anything, but I'm guessing more shops are in
London. I'm trying to arrange a meeting in London, so maybe I can find one
nearby the office. Funny thing is, I'm staying at the hotel that accused me
of being a smoker for brewing fresh coffee in their room. This time, I'll
do it closer to an open window. ;-) I do like UK hotels though because so
far, all of the one's I've stayed at, had a tea kettle available, so one
less thing to carry. Thanks for the tip to the UK shops.
Now, off to see if I can find tips on roasting Panama Gesha without ruining
it. I saw that Barefoot has some Gesha on the bar in French Press, so I'm
looking forward to trying that in 2 weeks (Chris - that's an invite if you
can get to the shop early in the AM before the kids school. I'm aiming to
get there at 7ish, when they open). Cup is on me! If you're interested to
try again, email me off list.
Have a good one everyone!
Greg

Ummm, Tom I gotta admit that's how I travel if I'm gone for more than a
week... A Poppery, Turkish grinder and melitta pourover and the Bodum H2O
boiler.. Would rather buy clothes where I'm going than coffee.. But keep
the crown it won't pass TSA anyhoo.

Tom sez: " Now, if we found someone on the list who actually travels with
green coffee and
a roaster (!) as well as grinder and brewer..."

Aha! I knew there would be one, but didn't think it would be you,
Terry! I mean, i travel with a roaster to give it to a producer
(which in itself has caused scrutiny at foreign customs counters) but
not for roasting my own coffee hile traveling... you win Terry ! You
are, in the best of ways, a TRUE coffee lunatic! -Tom

When I travel by car for longer than a week, I include an original
FreshRoast & greens along with the brewing equipment - a four cup
Melitta electric brewer - and a couple of mugs..
Last week I made a quick flying trip - no checked baggage. I
brought a small Melitta cone & filters, Zass Turkish grinder, my own
mug & enough coffee for two days. The TSA quizzed me just a bit
about the Zass (on the Xray) but decided I looked harmless and let me
go on without further inspection. (I used hot water from the
hotel's in-room brewer.)

Yes - the Hario grinder, even with ceramic burrs, got me some extra
inspection in carry on bags, with the TSA and overseas as well.

I've considered keeping a popper in my locker in San Diego for when I end up at the office out there....there's a Masters Appliance heat gun in the lab, but it's been used for lab stuff - I don't think I'd aim it at anything I was going to consume.
I did bring some greens once, and gave them to a cow-orker there who has thought about home roasting. Don't know if he ever actually did anything with them....

Back when Harrar Horse was in steady supply, C and I bought a fifth
wheel to travel with. I did bring along my modified P1 to roast with and
my Mazzer Mini to grind with, and the coffee on that trip was indeed
excellent.
Next year, we still were able to get pounds of the horse, but roasting
and grinding was a bit inconvenient we thought. ( C dropped the Mazzer
one day and it went through the oak door of a cabinet :( )
Soooooo, I roasted up several pounds of Harrar Horse, and then ground it
all! no vacuum sealing, just stored it all in those clamp top jars with
the silicon washer seal. We drank this coffee for several months,
enjoying every last drop :)
Now I do not claim to be a real connoisseur of coffee like lots of folks
on this list, but I do know what me and C like, and horse is really
better than fine :)
We sure miss having it around.
That being said, we have tried and liked several of the dry-processed
coffee that Tom offers, and almost all of the wet processed from the
sample packs.
Nope, none of the wet process appeals to us, and my taste buds are so
crude that it is hard to imagine that I can tell the difference in how
dry processed is roasted, but I can. And I can tell if I like it or not.
We never taste any of the wonderful flavors that are listed in the
description, but liking what it is, to me, is good enough. I have
finally decided.
